I only have one problem with that theory. Does Patsy have the mafia/political capital to be the boss? Unless I'm missing something, he didn't appear to be a big earner or very well respected. Why would the Dimeo family back him?

Then again, who was left, paulie?

Phil said it best when he said Jersey is not a family, it is a glorified crew. Johnny Soprano and Jackie Aprile Sr. brought the North Jersey crew to a mini-family status. NY wanted to knock back the NJ family back down to crew status to get them under control and limit the damage from the Phil/Tony war and the upcoming indictments.

Call it a staff re-organization sent down from NY

Regardless what we think, the writer or creator did an interview a few years back and basically said the intent was that he died. The black screen was circling back to what tony envisioned for death.

I was glad to see Phil killed. He was a scumbag.

Nothing. By definition, nothing happened after the story ended. There's not a secret truth you haven't been shown.

Ppl need to stop guessing 'who' killed him. members only jacket represented everyone he screwed over over the years. could have been anyone.

see tony nearly dying in episode 'members only.'

I've seen people say he lives and the makeup of the scene is meant to represent he's always living having to look over his shoulder. the only problem being nothing he does in the scene indicates he's paranoid or looking over his shoulder.

Do you have a link? Everything I've read from Chase, he has refused to say whether Tony lived or died. Before Gandolfini's death, it seemed they were in talks to make a Sopranos movie. Would be hard to do if he had killed Tony off.

I originally interpreted the scene as ambiguous - maybe he lives, maybe he dies, but if he lives, yeah- he's going to have to look over his shoulder.

I'm not so sure. Certainly from a framing, lighting, shooting and the directorial touches - that bell ringing and the chaos of the diner certainly invests the scene with a paranoid vibe - maybe I'm just a paranoid guy. I agree with you that Tony doesn't seem overly paranoid, at least outwardly, in the scene, but he is in NYC (not Jersey, where he would feel safer), there is a lot of activity, and the camera does lurch around as if to suggest Tony is looking for threats, assessing possible threats, etc.

So, it may just be a difference of interpretation.

Ultimately, I think the last scene - the fade to black - is Tony's last moment. Chase's statements are all over the place on that final scene, which is why the ambiguous ending folks (of which I was one) will continue to prevail.

the fade to black

it isnt a fade, it is instant black screen, very jarring and why I believe it indicates a bullet in the dome for Tony

Sorry - you're correct. It isn't a traditional "fade" - but I was groping for the film term and that was closest.

It echoes the, "You never hear the bullet with your name on it." It also strongly implies:

quote:

a bullet in the dome for Tony

Because it was tied in with the bell motif during the scene - we see the table in third person, bell rings - cut to Tony's POV. The scene repeated that until the end. Bell rings - black screen. Roll credits, "Don't stop....believin'".

After he died, there was a follow up interview where he basically said that death was his intention with the scene. Don't remember when, but I believe it was on the cnn website.

The worst Soprano spoiler alert was one day on a Monday at work I had recorded it from Sunday and was going to watch Monday night....sooo excited. Then all of the sudden that aggravating bitch Kat on 95.7 goes "Anybody watch Sopranos last night? OMG Tony killed Chris!"
I just slammed on the brakes and yelled "BITCH!" at the radio.....fuming the rest of the day.
Now I can't stand hearing that aggravating hooch on the radio without changing the station quickly in disgust.
