Seriously, lived through that movie - it was non-stop rotation in college.

"Driving with a load not properly tied down."

"You know, junk food doesn't deserve the bad rap that it gets. Take these pork rinds for example. This particular brand contains two percent of the R.D.A. - that's Recommended Daily Allowance - of riboflavin."

This is exactly the right choice. The scenes in New York -- the styles, the fashion, the hair, the white pimp's gang, everything -- are really. fricking. '80s. Eighties New York, granted, but still just about the most '80s scenes ever committed to celluloid.

A lot of the answers here seemed to focus more on the zeitgeist of the '80s or something. Wich is fine, but I'm more interested in movies that you can watch with the sound turned off and not giving a damn about the plot and immediately know from the details that the movie is absolutely taking place in the '80s and has captured all that was unique about that decade.

John Hughes is obviously the king of this category. Breakfast Club would be my #1 pick of those.

Others not previously mentioned:
- Beverly Hills Cop
- Fletch
- Miami Vice (tv series)

This is not the answer, but I always thought Donnie Darko did a very good job of capturing the 80's but not being over the top in a "hey look at us, it's the 80's" way. They did such a great job with the sound track.

Tango and Cash hits on damn near every single 80s action movie stereotype.

Berry Gordy's The Last Dragon is up there too.

I always forget Demi Moore is in that movie because of Michelle Johnson.

I would say the #1 soft-core in the 80's was Two Moon Junction with Sherilyn Fenn.

Valley Girl.

ETA: and Animal House. Set in the sixties, made in the seventies, but it described the eighties frat culture to a "T."
