I seem to recall the M/TV board liking this movie, but wasn't sure if I had it mixed up with Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare.

Thinking of watching New Nightmare on Netflix.

I had to get that out of the way first

But yeah it's a great film. Very much a film of it's time as both a commentary on the slasher genre specifically and horror as a whole at the time. I think it stands up well and there are few more interesting horror narratives out there.

Great movie.

Saw it in theaters, liked it then..not as much now. Concept was interesting, Could have been written better though.

New Nightmare was how dark Freddie was supposed to originally be in the Elm Street movies

New Nightmare and Dream Warriors are my two favorite Elm Street films, and they are very different in style, which is nice.

New Nightmare would have been better had Wes had asked Johnny Depp to be in it

I haven't seen that in years. Trying to watch a horror movie every night this month (October tradition) may play this one.
Cabin in the woods is the newest movie I play yearly around this time, always Halloween, Friday the 13th and Child's Play too.

Saw it for the first time recently, didn't care for it. I'm a big fan of the others but I don't like this concept and the movie never held my attention.

Is New Nightmare the one where the actors play themselves?

I liked it and thought it was quite an interesting twist. Loved having Nancy back. Dream Warriors is the best of all time and I loved that this brought back one of my favorite characters, even if she was playing herself and not Nancy.

If I am talking about the wrong movie then...oops.

I quite enjoyed it. Easily the second best film of the whole franchise.

In a way it is a prelude to Scream.

I don't think it has aged as well as Scream, but it is the film that really kicked off the meta horror genre. This is the film that truly changed the genre, even if it was the first attempt for Scream. Some of the things about the film which seemed so radical in 1990, now are standard tropes so the film has lost some of its power. Still, a great document of moving horror forward.

Right. It was basically Scream two years before Scream came out.

It's pretty good. I never was into the NOES series since I hated scary movies as a kid, but I liked this one though. And I agree that Scream holds up much better than New Nightmare.

And I also fully expected Freauxzen to be the first response in this thread, but he was actually the first two responses.

So I just made my better half watch Scream 1-3, and yeah they still hold up quite well. But I'd disagree about New Nightmare. Parts of it ring a little cheesy now, but I think that's fairly normal for the genre.

There's no way to get her to watch any Nightmare film. No way.
