‘Watchmen’ Pilot From Damon Lindelof Ordered by HBO

HBO has ordered a pilot for “Watchmen,” the new drama series it is developing with “The Leftovers” creator Damon Lindelof.
The premium service has also committed to additional backup scripts for the series. HBO confirmed the pilot order and script commitment Wednesday, one day after Lindelof teased on Instagram that work had begun in the writers room on the project.
“Watchmen” is based on the landmark DC Comics miniseries of the same name by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. The series, later collected as a graphic novel, was a serious-minded deconstruction of superhero comics loosely inspired by characters from the Charlton Comics library, which were owned by DC. Set in a universe in which the appearance of costumed heroes in the mid-20th Century had altered the course of history — leading to U.S. victory in Vietnam and a Nixon presidency that stretched into the mid-1980s — “Watchmen” followed a group of crimefighters investigating the murder of one of their own. In the process, those characters — including Doctor Manhattan, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, and Rorschach — uncover a conspiracy with enormous implications.
On Tuesday, Lindelof posted a picture of a statue modeled after an image from the comics, and captioned the photo “Day One.” The statue appeared to be placed on a table in the middle of a writers room.
HBO had previously taken a crack at developing “Watchmen” as a series in 2014, but abandoned that effort. Lindelof, whose show “The Leftovers” ended its three-season run on HBO earlier this year, is starting from scratch with his take. Variety reported on HBO’s development plans for the project in June.
“Watchmen” is being produced by Warner Bros. Television, where Lindelof has an overall deal.

The movie was pretty faithful to the comics. I don't see the point. Are they going to do a different story in that world?

I think the idea is a different take and expansion of the story? It's surprising to me that there hasn't been more Watchmen stories out there...lots of potential in the franchise.
Either way, I'm excited for this with Lindelof leading it and it being on HBO

Rorschach made the movie work. I enjoyed it but I didn't feel the tear down was there for comics. I only saw the theatrical cut though.
DC long after the movie was a success did a line called Before Watchmen.
It was trash to mediocre for the most part.
With the failure of Nu52 broperman and the relaunch of Rebirth Watchmen is finally breaching in to the main stories with Dr. Manhattan as a multiversal force. It's not a good idea.

Might have 2 of the best trailers of all time. The one with the Muse song is amazing. Hadn't been that hyped for a movie in a long time. Actually read the comic prior. Movie was a bit of a letdown.

I love the graphic novel. It's awesome.
I enjoyed the movie. It's not good.
I am not excited about this. Lindelof is terrible.

Isn't the whole point of Watchmen to deconstruct the superhero team narrative and expose the villains of comic books to be humanity itself rather than pure evilmonsters with powers?
Not sure what else there is do with the series. The movie was choppy, but the message was great and seemed complete.

Didn't read it, but there was a prequel watchmen series about the original Watchmen published by DC a few years ago.
It would be cool if they strade with that and worked the original GN in after a few seasons.

really enjoy the director's cut version of the film. i'd be fine if that's all we ever get.

Movie was decent, it tried reallllly hard to stick to the graphic novel and that might've been the downfall.
Probably should've been 2 short movies instead of one long one.

I'm pissed a genius like Lindelof is playing to the lowest common denominator by getting into the comic book shite

I just don't believe it will be a faithful representation because of the outlet (HBO). Rorschach is the conservative member of the "team," and ends up being the only actual hero. No way HBO portrays him accurately.

Ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh, not really. He was a serial killer with paranoid delusions and a black/white view of the world.
Manhattan lays it down at the end with his last words to Veidt, none of them are heroes, humanity will beat the shite out of itself, no matter how many bodies they thought was enough to sacrifice for peace it wouldn't be enough.
So the peace may last days or years but the new order would eventually lead to weapons designed to fight nonexistent space monsters turned on each other. Or the nukes get brought out again.
