This is my all time favorite Mel Gibson movie. Should be required viewing for high school history courses.

I loved The Patriot. If I ever see Jason Isaacs I may fall into a trance and knock him out because he's such an evil fricker in it.

I liked it.

Was it historically accurate? No more or less than Tombstone or Selma.

No. It was less. Much less.

But hey so was Braveheart and I liked that one.

How could anyone like this piece of garbage (besides LeonPhelps whose opinions are beyond laughable).

It's overwraught, wildly inaccurate, melodramatic, over the top, terribly acted dreck. This movie is an utter abortion and is borderline offensive in how it treated a variety of topics.

I think there was a thread on here as to what the most hated villain in a film was, and his character in the Patriot was one of the first ones mentioned.

ETA here's the thread... Most hated bad guy

Because people get enjoyment out of different things. I know that might come as a shock.

I guess I could see how a teenager might like this movie when it came out...good action, lots of good looking people, lots of evil and revenge shite going on. But as a seasoned film viewer, this movie was insulting and borderline comedic. My brother liked this movie and I told him last week I've never seen it, he didn't believe me. But it came on one of the HBO channels today so I recorded it. Mistakes were made.

I could never get through the whole thing myself. It's just so "Hurray for our side. We're good and they're evil" with no depth and just the most simplistic motivations (IMHO of course). And even then that formula can work sometimes if very well done. For me this one just wasn't well done.

Oh, and:

quote:

First off, is Mel Gibson into self mutilation and/or torture because every role he played in the 90's he gets his family killed and home burned.

I think the dude definitely has some type of martyr complex.

To be fair, I haven't watched it in a long time. I might feel differently now.

Don't care what you say, the scene where he pretty much kills the entire redcoat platoon with his tomahawk at the beginning is pretty awesome. Got a knife to Heath ledgers throat? Boom headshot. With a tomahawk.

I hope you are being sarcastic. It's easily one of the most historically inaccurate films to come out this century so far.

That's true, but this film is terrible on every level. It's the film I hate more than any other. It's not the funny terribleness of Battlefield Earth. It's just melodramatic terrible, and that's not even enjoyable.

I feel pretty strongly about this. I once wrote a very long dissertation on this. That's how deep my hate runs.

I love it but It was one of the first R rated movies I watched when I was like 11 or 12 so it's probably for nostalgic reasons.
