Ex Machina is good, but I thought AI addressed the same questions more deeply and interestingly.

yea I just watched Ex Machina tonight thanks to this thread. Very average movie.

I can't really see how it's average. It does a lot of things in editing and sound that are great as well as the visuals of the robots. Its basic plot is tried and true, but its structure is suspenseful and engaging, allowing the audience to identify with each character in turn and to, in turn, root for them and then condemn them and ultimately mourn them. It is strong to excellent in everything it does.

If the movie didn't sit well with you, that's understandable. Not all movies are for everyone. But ex machina is a great film.

Exactly, as the viewer you quickly become aware that something is wrong with this situation, yet you really have no idea what is wrong.

It makes you uncomfortable with just dialogue.

I really don't understand the reverence so many have for Ex Machina. I thought it was a good scifi movie but so many people talk about it like it's Matrix level good.
Will never disparage The Matrix - it was and is great, esp considering it released in 1999.

As for Ex Machina, it's brilliant as a movie and it's handover to the audience for interpretation. It's what I wish Inception would have been - yes, I know ppl love Inception.

In the same way The Matrix addresses "is my consciousness a dream" in an action flick, Ex Machina addresses "what is consciousness" in a dialogue flick.

Neither are original concepts, but the delivery is very strong.
