Was Westworld really good or the mere product of gimmick editing?

WW played games with the audience. Multiple timelines were shown at the same time with the same characters while the audience is left in the dark. Suppose the stories were laid out in chronological order (as happened in a version of Godfather II), do the stories retain their impact, their punch, or do they lose steam because the guessing game is gone?

Of course it would lose some luster.
But it was a great premise overall. Cut out Will's entire story and you still have an intriguing show.
Only criticism I have is that I don't have anyone left to root for. Should I really be rooting for Dolores? She's a droid who is killing humans.

I wouldn't really consider that gimmick editing
Flashbacks are just another way to tell a story, they just didn't reveal that we were seeing flashbacks until the last episode

This is kind of a silly question

The same could be asked about pulp fiction, or any other film with a twist for that matter.

I watched it and will continue to do so, but I'm not super anxious for the next season to start like some shows I watch. It's good but not great IMO. They tried a little too much and then just blew it all up in the end.

I'm like 5 episodes in and really hoping for a hook. It's good enough to make me think an interesting story is coming, but it isn't there yet. Yes, the hosts are becoming cognizant, but is there a story line worth 5 more hours of my life. So far it feels like they are living on a "cool" concept.

That's the perk of creating a story where the characters never age because they're artificial. You can mess with the time lines to play with the viewers.

I will disagree at least in part. I really liked Westworld but they were clearly up to a different type of game with the audience than Pulp Fiction - although not entirely different from Memento. In the case of Westworld the time and actual identity of the characters at different points of the story is with-held from the viewer (without being clear that it is with-held) until the point at which big plot twists can be combined with the revelation of the disjointed nature of the timeline.
This was partially dishonest for the purpose of the reveal, but it wasn't entirely unfair because it was at least clear to the audience that the central story (like in Memento) included the loss of important memories by the major character(s).
I don't really think the audience was ever duped by the disjointed time-line in Pulp Fiction. The story occurs over a pretty short temporal window and the combination of intertwined vignettes just ends up to be a little more interesting when told out of linear order. When you watch it in temporal order the story actually feels less connected because the viewer doesn't have to actively think about how the different characters relate from the other stories.

I wouldn't say it was gimmicky editing, but no. The editing is a lot of the appeal of Westworld. LOST wouldn't have been as good chronologically either and it's nice to have a complex intertwined narrative rather than just playing it straight forward.

No, multiple time periods were shown as flashbacks which became obvious as the plot progressed. A timeline is a linear sequence of events over time. The depicted events were all part of the same timeline. Call it semantics but from my perspective separate timelines implies alternate universes/versions of events. For instance, if Hitler had never been born, then WWII might never have happened. Reality as we know is part of the same timeline since time began. IMHO parts of the same timeline should be referred to as separate time frames or time periods not separate timelines.

Have you watched it chronologically? There is a torrent out there where you can do just that called Chronologically Lost. It wouldn't make sense if you hadn't seen the series before, but it's a pretty cool way to rewatch the series.

I still don't know about this show. I'm 5 episodes in but have yet to feel that "I don't care if it's 11 o'clock on a work night I have to watch another episode" feeling from it. I like it, but almost feel like I have to make myself watch sometimes. I'll stick with it and see how it goes at the end of the season.

I felt the same way the whole season.

I watch Mr. Robot and half the time I'm not 100% certain if what I'm watching is actually happening or not, so a few unannounced flashbacks is nothing.
Convoluted plotting is the new thing in hollywood.

I liked the way it was structured and the acting is as good as television gets. For me, I can put up with a few tricks and gimmicks if the acting is top notch.
Memento (another Nolan family project) is a classic example of this. The entire film is a gimmick, but so well done and different, and so well acted that it deserves quite high praise.
As does West World.
(ETA: Mo - I typed my post before I saw yours - great minds think alike, apparently, on the Memento comparison.)

Dolores is the android equivalent of mentally ill. She's suffering from PTSD, for lack of a better term. And she was programmed to start killing folks, so she's not fully to blame.
It will be interesting to see how the park devolves into factions, like Lost or TWD.

and they gave a lot of clues that it was a flashback.
