Was There Anything Movie Rental Stores Could Have Done

To avoid the bankruptcies and going out of business?

I was wondering this over the weekend while I passed multiple RedBox outlets outside of convenience stores and passed an empty closed down Blockbuster store.

Technology advanced to where people could pirate movies online. Services like Netflix popped up. We have access to rentals through digital cable services.

Was there anything that these stores could have done to remain open and profitable? Or was it just inevitable and would have had no chance regardless of anything being done differently?

Not ignored things like netflix as a fad and set up something similar sooner.

Blockbuster ended up adopting a netflix type of model where you could even drop off and pick up in stores I believe. That would have been a little better than Netflix IMO.

They were just slow to react and lost the opportunity.

We had a good discussion about this a long time ago. The general consensus (me included) is that Blockbuster offers basically the same thing that Netflix does with the mailing the discs. They even have the in store drop off. However I along with many other posters have vowed to never give Blockbuster another dollar due to their years of treating their customers like shite when there was no legit competition around. This IMO is the biggest reason for their fall from grace.

No chance. The brick and mortar stores were on the way out regardless with all the options you mentioned. Why waste time and gas driving to a store when you can pay the same amount and have a movie sent right to you TV?

Blockbuster is giving it a go but Netflix is owning them right now I'd guess.

The only thing I can think of is if they offered more than just movies. There's a place in Auburn called Hastings that has a ton of movies to rent and buy, video games, books, movies, games, music... basically everything. It's great if you want to just go and rent something that's not on Redbox. And their prices are like a dollar a night for a non new release. They have great deals where you can rent a new movie for like three bucks and if you return it the next day you get a couple dollars of credit back. Then you can rent old movies for a dollar a night, return it the next day and get a dollar credit back. You can ride the system for awhile for free.

I hate Redbox because there's hardly ever anything good in it and Netflix takes awhile, but I still have a subscription.

I remember when Netflix was just starting and one of the business magazines like Forbes or something wrote an article about how stores like Blockbuster should pay attention to them. Not only because of the convenient service that they were offering movie customers but because other start ups would come with them and that they need to act in order to combat the new competition and new business model.

The determining factors for me were this:

1) Netflix is far superior when comparing streaming content

2) Blockbuster used to ship out your next title in the mail as soon as you returned one to the store. They changed that and now you have to return your store rental that you swapped out for before they mail the next one. This irked me. I immediately switched to Netflix when they did this and haven't looked back

Probably not. The second Netflix came around it wasn't even a debate for me which way to go. Of course I'm lazy so...

They could have cornered the video game market and not let places like gamestop and walmart step in. I still dont think that would have helped them in the movie department but overall it would have.

They could have partnered with places like pizza hut, dominos, etc so that when you order food you can also order a movie.

Their really is nothing they could have done.

Doesn't explain Redbox. Can't imagine why people use that shite. Still have to bring your arse to and from machine. Screw that.

I rent movies using my X-Box or PS3 and stream them.

I guess it's because people that would still physically rent like redbox because it is cheaper than the stores. But the selection is not great.

For the most part I think the rental stores dug their own grave - they built a business model that made a lot of their money off late fees and IMO that was unsustainable.

They are also (for me at least) all over the place. I can always pick a movie up when I go to CVS/Walgreens/grocery store. They aren't out of the way. I know Blockbuster used to be everywhere, but you would still often have to drive a few miles. With redbox, they are just around the corner or at least on the way from where ever you're coming from.

They are definitely convenient. I think they would really be awesome if they offered deeper selections but these boxes have limited space and you aren't ever going to please everyone.

The convenience of redbox as well as the price is definitely what has made them wildly popular.

I think the people who use redbox are just your causal movie watcher. They may watch one maybe two movies a week at most and only care about new releases. For those people I can see where redbox makes sense.

Redbox is great for people who don't watch a lot of movies. It's for people who watch a movie every blue moon and want it today rather than two days in the mail from netflix. Also they only have to pay a dollar rather thana subscription fee.

For someone like me Redbox doesn't work.

That happens to be a pretty large market. So I can see why they are successful.
