yeah, didn't bill talk about that earlier in the film during the jail scene? Also about how it's better to be slow because the guy who rushes will most likely miss.
I watched about the first half the movie yesterday. It's been a while before that since I've seen it.

I've never taking the whole protagonist/antagonist view of this movie. That's one of the reasons why it is so great. There are no good guys or bad guys in this movie. William Munny may have been who you "rooted" for, but he was by no means the "good guy". He murdered two men for money. Then he gunned down an entire bar for revenge.
Little Bill was not a "bad guy" or a "good guy". He murdered Ned while he was "unarmed" out of revenge for the killing of the Bar T boys. He was a ruthless SOB but he thought he was on the right side so all his brutality was acceptable.
Little Bill IMO was smarter and more clever than Munny, but he surrounded himself with idiots who couldn't back him up during the shootout. That was his undoing.
To the poster who mentioned the head whore as being just as bad, that is a good observation. I've seen this movie 50 times and analyzed it up and down and I've never thought to include her into the same category as English Bob, Munny, and Li'l Bill.

What did he say about killing their dogs and burning their houses down?
Basically "I'm coming out, don't shoot. If any man tries to shoot me I am not just going to kill him, I am going to kill his wife, and all of his friends, and I am going to burn is god damn house down too."

"Claudia straightened me up. Cleared me of drinking whiskey and all. But then somebody had to go and cut up a whore. Wrong move." - William Munny (1880)

Will Munny: It's a hell of a thing, killing a man. Take away all he's got and all he's ever gonna have.
The Schofield Kid: Yeah, well, I guess they had it coming.
Will Munny: We all got it coming, kid.

Will Munny: Who's the fellow owns this shithole?
[pause]
Will Munny: You, fat man. Speak up.
Skinny Dubois: Uh, I... I own this establishment. I bought the place from Greeley for a thousand dollars.
[Will levels the shotgun, and speaks to someone standing behind Skinny]
Will Munny: You better clear outta there.
Man: Yes, sir.
[scampers out of the way]
Little Bill Daggett: Just hold it right there. Hold it...!
[Will shoots Skinny. Screaming, the women scatter upstairs]
Little Bill Daggett: Well, sir, you are a cowardly son of a bitch! You just shot an unarmed man!
Will Munny: Well, he should have armed himself if he's going to decorate his saloon with my friend.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Little Bill Daggett: You'd be William Munny out of Missouri. Killer of women and children.
Will Munny: That's right. I've killed women and children. I've killed just about everything that walks or crawled at one time or another. And I'm here to kill you, Little Bill, for what you did to Ned.
BRILLIANCE!!!

(although I respect your opinion if you don't like this movie)
Pale Rider is my favorite Eastwood western but this is a very close second

I always thought that was Eastwood's "thing".
Was Dirty Harry a good cop?
Josey Wales?
William Muney?
Hang em' High?
the one where he makes em paint the town red.
the one where he's the preacher / gun slinger.
Seems his whole mojo is the duality of man, good vs. evil. Wait, I think that's Full Metal Jacket, sir.

Don't forget "Kelly's Heroes." He was the good/bad guy in that movie. His mission to rob a bank played a role in the "Normandy Breakout."
