An added benefit for S1 for me was it made the best use of Louisiana locations that I think I've seen anywhere - tv or film.

Pizolata (sp?) is from Louisiana and season 1 of True Detective was basically his life work. Rolled all of his experiences of growing up in South Louisiana in the 80's/90's and nailed the imagery, folklore, and history into a very compelling story.

Season 2 he had to come up with from scratch in less than a year - set in a place with which he was only familiar. Hence the letdown. The richness and depth of S1 wasn't there. Captured lightning in a bottle on S1. I'd like to see him stick with more story lines set in Louisiana or at least the South. Lot's of creepy stuff to explore.

another huge reason for the weak second season, aside from story, was they didn't have Cary Fukunaga. He's a very skilled and talented director, and brought a certain texture and mood to the first season that the "director by committee" group couldn't come close to matching in the second. And to me he is one of the biggest missing pieces on the show. He's listed as a producer but I imagine that's more of a hands off role in this situation.

That said, I will definitely watch a season 3. I'm a sucker for detective stories.

Season 1 was driven by the acting and setting. Two outstanding lead performances amid a creepy southern gothic. Ultimately, I think it proved to be a little style over substance, but it was still really good.

Season 2 was truly awful. One of the worst seasons of TV I ever watched start to finish. The best thing about it was Colin Farrell's acting, which I think pretty well sums it up.

I don't know what to think about season 3, but this talk of "fantastic" and "terrific" scripts sounds a little desperate to me.

Good point. I think there was a famous author who once said something like any writer with decent writing ability should be able to write one good story - based on their own life/experiences/observations. Can't remember who said it though - maybe Hemingway.

+1

S1 was definitely a collection of once in a lifetime performances (writer, producer, director, cinematography, and acting)

There's one scene in season 1 that's a continuous shot and it's magnificent

The drug/money raid scene, one of the best continuous shot scenes ever honestly.

A customer of mine when I worked at the bank was the black dude who brings them to the drug house.

Every time someone brings up True Detective, it always makes me think of AT&True Detective.
