True Detective season 3 is officially a go. HBO announced at the Television Critics Association's press tour on Wednesday that Moonlight Oscar winner Mahershala Ali is set to lead the upcoming third outing of the drama, which has a new set of "fantastic" scripts. (via Entertainment Weekly)

True Detective debuted to massive critical acclaim with its first season, which starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson. (Both earned Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for their work.) However, the second season was a little less well-received, with the show failing to recapture the magic of the first season with Colin Farrell, Vince Vaughn, and Rachel McAdams at the helm.

The third season was long delayed after the performance of the second season, but reports first began to surface earlier this year that the network was in the early stages of pursuing another outing for the show. Past reports said that creator Nic Pizzolatto was working on the scripts for he new season, with four-time Emmy winner and 24-time Emmy nominee David Milch (Deadwood) set to help him out. With the new comments from HBO, it appears that their scripts are just about read to get an official green light.

"I have read five scripts for a third season," HBO president of programming Casey Bloys told the assembled reporters. "I'm very impressed and excited about what I've read. I don't want to give away the storyline, but I think they're really terrific." Bloys said HBO is currently looking for directors for the project, which would be the final step before work on the show can officially get underway.

Hope the show rebounds nicely. Maybe Lisa can return. That would help.

I've never watched this. The first season was all the hype on this board then crickets. Is it worth the watch?

First season is really great, it's mainly because of the chemistry between Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson (and those Dadarrio goodies for sure) and how great of a performance Matthew put up, his character is intriguing. The plot line keeps you interested as well, it's pretty good.

Season 2 was a shitfest trying to capitalize on the success of the first one, they just hired other A-List actors (Colin Ferrell, Rachel McAdams, Vince Vaughn) thinking they could reproduce the lightning they had in a bottle with Matthew/Woody but it just wasn't near as good. It's not terrible but it's def not in the same league as the first.

If you are interested, just watch the first season, you won't be disappointed.

The seasons have no relation at all to each other, so just watch Season 1.

Don't bother at all with Season 2. It is extremely terrible.

The first season was good but the ending left a lot to be desired. Was very disappointed with that.

i believe that the creator blew his wad by episode 6-7 of season 1 and the jumbled finale that shite on everything that mad people engaged in season 1 + season 2 is much more likely of a path for this season

I really enjoyed all 8 episodes of the first season. I know some didn't care for the final two but I thought they were great.

I'll agree that the second season wasn't on the same level, but I'm in the minority when I say that I still liked it. It was definitely hard to follow, though.

First season was one of the best things ever on TV. Both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson were great. They really nail South Louisiana life in the early 90s -- Harrelson wears a Pink Floyd T-shirt, because of course that guy went to the show in the Superdome in 1994. And he joins Promise Keepers in an effort to fix his marriage -- because of course a police officer who was drinking too much and screwing around would go to them for help.

The second season was kind of a mess, but it has its charms. It's a little trashier, like there's an episode centered around an orgy that featured porno actresses. Colin Farrell was great, so was the soundtrack. Rachel McAdams was solid. Vince Vaughn was way over his head.

One guy directed the whole first season, but he skipped out on the second season. My theory is that he was the straw that stirred the drink. I just hope they get everything right with this third season.

The show was definitely at its peak in the middle of season 1, had some of the best episodes of any show I've seen. Ending wasn't perfect but I still enjoyed it. Overall season 1 is fantastic. I'd recommend it to anyone.

Season 2 was so meh. I think it had one interesting episode, that's it. Not worth the time.

Just based on this I will gladly give S3 a shot.

FIFY

I knew once he was busted for stealing Rust Cohle season 2 was going to suck.

This was pretty much my take too. The majority of Season 1 I'd put up among the best t.v. shows out there. Some people didn't care for the end. But then again, there are some people who don't care for the end of any show. The difference here is that the end of S1 was, in effect the end of that particular storyline altogether - it was the equivalent of a series finale and some people didn't care for how they wrapped it up.

An added benefit for S1 for me was it made the best use of Louisiana locations that I think I've seen anywhere - tv or film.

S2 was ok and I enjoyed it. But it wasn't anywhere near great t.v.

I'll give season 3 a whirl when it comes out to see what it's like.

Pretty much this. I would even go so far as to say only the first half of Season 1 was great.

That is the understatement of the year.

There's one scene in season 1 that's a continuous shot and it's magnificent
