I took a class on WWII in college and we watched this thing front to back. One of the few non-documentaries made about the war that encompasses both sides and is incredibly accurate to true events.

Yeah TMC has Tora, Tora, Tora AMC has Pearl Harbor.

No contest between the two.

Is this the movie where they document the Japanese decision to keep rearming their planes from torpedoes to bombs?

People don't realize what a huge deal that was. They pulled their planes out of service not once but twice to rearm them. Just can't remember if that was Tora Tora Tora or Midway.

Amazing to think how history might have changed if Emperor Hirohito had listened to Admiral Yamamoto in the years leading up to the attack on Pearl Harbor. He foretold the downfall of his own empire.

Midway... In their haste to change from bombs to torpedoes, they left the bombs on the hanger decks. When the US dive bombers attacked, the three Japanese carriers that were hit were raging infernos within minutes. Unfortunately, the one carrier that wasn'the hit was able to launch the attack that doomed the Yorktown before it too was sunk.

there were three waves, but not three sorties for each pilot.

They were 200 miles away, so a 400 mile round trip.

So I don't think they rearmed planes and sent them back out. TORA shows that some Navy brass were upset the last bombing raid wasn't launched.
had they gone for the final raid they would have gotten the carriers as well.

They may have gotten the carriers with another raid, but I think the main thing they missed was the fuel storage tanks. They could have rendered the harbor unusable for a long period of time if they had gotten those.

midway is actually a pretty decent movie. there were lots of not easy to explain details that they did a pretty good job with. always liked it better than tora. always partial to in harms way, even though its not grounded at all in history

They wouldn't have gotten the carriers; the only one anywhere near Pearl was the Enterprise, and it was still a day's sail out. But, as someone else noted, a second attack might well have destroyed the vital fuel storage facilities, which would have rendered Pearl useless for months.

Midway is one of my favorite war movies because it is able to get the viewer to appreciate the distance involved between ships on the battlefield. Amazing and hard to wrap your mind around.

Watched some of the special on the History channel with the veterans that were at Pearl- That was very well done and moving. Reminded me of watching 9-11 docs.
