Breaking Bad is like the drug that is centered around. You start watching and you're hooked. For me, once it was done, it was time to move on to something else. I've tried to re watch a few times but I wasn't able to really invest myself like I did the first time around.
The Wire is "the great American novel of television." I first watched it two summers ago and since then have re watched it three times. There are so many themes that enter and exit throughout the series, that it can be overwhelming for some, but that's what makes it so compelling. I appreciate even more after reading Simon's "Homicide."
Like some have said, season 2, the first time around, was a little bit of a chore, but once you come full circle and watch the series over again, you seen the importance of it. When I introduce the series to new people, I tell them that you don't really feel everything that the series accomplishes until you go into it for a second time. That's why, for me, I don't rank the seasons. I appreciate the entire series as a whole, with each season being a segment of a long novel.

I had never seen it before, but I watched the entire series over about 10 days in the last week or two. Overall I give it an A grade. I thought the first season was the best, followed very closely by season three. Season two and four were very good too, but not quite the level as the other two. Season five was a little off for me. Hopefully, I don't get crucified for not thinking season five was as good as the others. I know how this board loves the series.
It's definitely worth watching. If I was ranking it, it would be third as overall series behind Breaking Bad and The Sopranos. Depending on how Game of Thrones concludes, it could drop to fourth. All four are outstanding though, so that isn't meant as a slight.
Everything this guy said
I actually never finished season 5. I'll do that once I can get HBONow on my Xbox or Chromecast.

I'm watching The Wire right now and just watched Episode 11 of Season 2 (next to last one of the season). I don't get all the hate for Season 2. In some ways it is more interesting than Season 1 (i.e., I've seen lots of shows/movies with dealing drugs on the streets, I can't recall seeing much smuggling through ports and how it works). I can't wait to see what happens to Ziggy tonight in the finale, I hate that fricker

Can we please sticky a thread with a subject, "YES! YOU SHOULD WATCH THE WIRE!" so these threads won't get started all the time?

Would be beyond epic.

No doubt that Ziggy is an annoying little shite but I felt bad for him at the end of the season. I can't say for sure if I'd snap or not after being a walking punchline my entire life.

The Wire is a level above Breaking Bad.
Br Ba has too many far fetched moments throughout the series. It's a great show but after seeing both I can't put it on the same level as The Wire
I guess it depends on how you define same level. I haven't seen all of Breaking Bad, so i can't rank it overall. What I've seen is awesome. The Wire I currently rank as the best show i've ever seen and my impression after 2 seasons of BB is that it will not over take the Wire on my list, or for that matter The Americans. But still one of the best shows i've ever seen. This is the golden age of TV drama for sure.

Except Omar death.
That shite was tough. I almost stopped watching completely after that happened.

the second season kinda blows
I could not disagree more. I love season two. People complain there isn't enough of the streets but everything that happens in season 3 is set up by season 2.
Frank's story is tragic example of how playing in the gray can ruin someone.

That is the perfect analogy.
I thought season 1 was fantastic. As good as any season of any show ever. Ziggy definitely made season 2 a chore to get through. Also it has the whole, getting the band back together feel to it that's a bit cliché. Season 3 was very good and got me back in. I liked season 4 as well. Season 5 felt like season 2 of Heroes to me, an obvious and painful decline in story.
If I was ranking the sesons: 1..3,4..2......5. As a whole, a great series, top 5 definitely. But if I had to pick a series to rewatch, I would pick Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, and Game of Thrones before The Wire
I agree with you on season 1. I thought it was amazing. It's really tough for me to pick between seasons 1 and 3. I thought both were absolutely incredible.

and no where near the utterly useless JarJar Binks.
You're right. Jar jar binks had a little more sense than to walk around with a duck on a leash.

I keep saying I want to get into it but just starting out damn 5 seasons seems like an investment.
I believe Breaking Bad to be the best TV drama created. Is The Wire really on that same level?
They're different. Breaking Bad is a slipstream. I think it's better from a pure entertainment perspective than The Wire. But I don't think that Breaking Bad will linger in my brain the way that The Wire has.
The Wire requires a bit more of an investment from the viewer, but I think the payoff is greater as well. I would put The Wire ahead of Breaking Bad...but that's just my opinion.

But I just can't imagine watching a show like that twice. I won't be doing it.

You really should. Season 5 isn't the best, but the ending is powerful.

Come on now, there's no way around killing off Omar. Had to be done.

Oh, I didn't rewatch it until last summer. My other viewings came from the marathon HBO had this past holiday, and introducing it to new people. I didn't just jump back into another viewing of it after seeing it the first time.

It's just so heavy. I'm good with one viewing.

But by a kid?!?! shite at least let it be in a blaze of glory while taking out either Chris, Snoop, or Marlo. Or if it's gonna be a kid, it would have been fitting if it had been Mike since Mike takes over Omar's role robbing stash houses.
