I would've liked to have seen Col. Tavington make the list. He's always on my most hated villain list.

Amon Goeth, would be my number 1 based on the fact that his portrayal is based on a REAL villain not a fictional character.

frick if we go Star Wars I would go straight to George Lucas for ruining the franchise with those prequels.

Tavington was too over-the-top, and I don't think intentionally like Dr. Evil was. If you want to see a villain that succeeds in the despicable department that Emmerich was going for but missed the mark, watch Pan's Labyrinth.

And I don't want to take anything away from Fiennes, but I felt the portrayal was low-key - probably true to life and realistic and done deliberately.

There is a general resemblence between Fiennes and Neeson (Neeson is Irish and Fiennes has some Irish ancestry) - and I believe this was intentional - both Schindler and Goeth were Nazis and I remain convinced that Spielberg was trying to tell us the "both sides of the coin" story - one man's choices wildly diverged with the other's.

A great, chilling villain because of the nonfictional nature of it, but I think he loses points to the other guys on the list who were more over-the-top and had more liberty to really enjoy being bad.

Fiennes was convincing as a real person - who was also evil.

No Magneto? Seriously?

What about Gary Oldman in Leon?

The Operative in Serenity? For this line alone, he should be on there:
Mal:I don't kill children.
Operative: I do.

not to mention Lecter is a supporting protagonist in Silence of the Lambs

Exactly. Every time I see a greatest villains list Micheal Corleone at the top I want cry. Micheal, like Lector is evil, but he is cleary the protagonist of the Godfather. To me the villain has to be an antagonist. Now, not all antagonists are villains or evil, but all villains are antagonists.

Does someone have to be the antagonist to be a villain?

Why?

For example, Darth Maul is not the antagonist in PM, he was just a henchman.

We should do a spinoff of the most satisfying villain deaths of the last 25 years.

In my view, yes because that is the nature of the narrative structure. The Godfather is about Michael Corleone and his transformation, or his fall if you will, there fore he is the protagonist of the story, how can he be the villain? I would argue he is evil, but with in that particular story he is the protagonist. If he is the villain, who is the hero?

Same with Lector, he is a supporting protagonist (BTW this another pet peeve of mine, but neither Brando for the GF or Hopkins for Lambs should have won best actor but best supporting actor sure, great performances, but that's another thread ). Anyway, if SOTL, Buffalo Bill is the villain, he's the antagonist, he's the guy they are chasing.

but he works for the main villain/antagonist, Darth Sidious/Palaptine. Like Oddjob in Goldfinger. He fights the protagonist.

There are obviously some gray area's, but to me the protagonist can not be the villain, maybe that's the better way to put it.
