so let me get this straight...

an early 90s movie (that bombed hard in theaters) which most of this board probably wanted a sequel to when they were young is going to get one and but b/c a black woman will be one of what is implied to be multiple Rocketeers based on the title everyone is mad?

Also, how is it when comics make a Supergirl, Spider-Woman, She-Hulk, etc it is bashed for not creating unique and new female superheroes

Supergirl I can see because her original incarnation was basically Superman with small tits.

Spider-Woman, however, isn't even remotely the same as Spider-Man, was originally a VILLAIN, is British, and is now a single mom.

She-Hulk is what you get when you make Hulk female and able to keep her mind when she transforms, give her the ability to control her transformations at will, and give her Deadpool's 4th wall breaking ability.

the only 2 issues i see with this are:

1. how do they incorporate a black woman during this time frame? that has some major potential to be annoying, which leads to

2. a big part of the original was that it was a throw back to the WW2-era, pro-America crime caper. it was a period piece that really hit those feels. if they do #1 like i think they will, then it will basically be almost the opposite of this theme. that may create issues to me

The original took place in 1938. 6 years later would place it right at the end of WWII. At this point, a group of African American women had applied to fly with the WASPs but was largely denied. So instead they flew in the Civilian Pilot Training Program at Tuskegee and at least one obtained her commercial pilot's license in Chicago shortly after. So there were some African-American women who were flying at the time and in programs.

There were also African-American women who went to fly with the WAAFs (British Women's Auxiliary) since they weren't as accepted here in the US as pilots during WWII.

So historically, it's there if Disney actually follows history (take that for what it's worth).

Yeah I'm not sure where they go from the original in the timeframe they're discussing. The Cold War obviously started firing up at that time post-WWII but it was nothing like the 60s.

Exactly. Let's shoehorn a black woman into the role of ex-pilot during WWII (when black men were relegated to cooks and shite on naval boats, with rare exception) right after all the negative press about the lack of roles in Hollywood for black people and women. O, and during a time of social upheaval in which a prominent movement called "Black Lives Matter" has thrust itself into the newspapers and public consciousness.

It is blatant pandering and, ultimately, a bad starting point. If they put it in current era, fine, but the 1940s? Even with the WASPs, we're stretching credulity by the mere concept. The WASPs didn't have black women. They had a native American and two Chinese Americans.

Honestly, I could give a damn if they reboot the Rocketeer. I didn't think the original was great anyway and with the technology of today, it could be well served to reboot the main concept of the story. But to do so in such a blatantly pandering fashion is an insult to the viewing public.

I just find it difficult to believe a black female can be a rocket pack pilot hero.

This is the saddest thing I have heard all week.

From Jennifer Connelly in her prime to Leslie Jones... come to thing of it, that's a pretty good analogy for what's happened to America in the intervening years.

It could work, and work very well... but they need the right actress and right script. A young, talented, and promising actress could do this. But given the demographics of this country if I was going to go ethnic minority female lead character I'd go Latina.

There is no great shortage of talented Latina actresses in Hollywood right now.

I have never seen this many little girls cry because somebody else got an ice cream cone. Holy shite- you would think somebody had just announced they were destroying the original copy.

I'd pay money to see them do the old Cinemaware "Rocket Ranger" game as a movie where a jet pack soldier flies around the globe fighting evil Nazi aliens.

It's a currently unused license outside of the Cinemaware game packs on Steam et all.

How long until Marty McFLy is a black tranny played by the MTV Board's favorite Allstate Spokeswoman, Leslie Jones?

Oh and in this reboot Doc Brown is a gay, communist sympathizer who steals plutonium, not from Libyan Terrorists, but from "evil" toxic waste dumping, greedy capitalists.

The Rocketeer is still one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I remember at the time everyone talking about what garbage it was, but now I've noticed its part of some kind of early 90s nostalgia. Weird.

I fricking loved it in the theater. I was also in 8th or 9th grade at the time and just beginning my long masturbatory romance with Jennifer Connelly. I still think it was a fun movie, despite all the super serious film-hipsters who have to take a shite on anything that wasn't directed by an approved doctor of the psyche.

I'm also sick of remakes like this. And as you said, the Rocketeer wasn't exactly a blockbuster, so it's a really odd choice.

I'd have no problems with women as the lead, but why all these remakes? Where's the originality?

They won't do either. It'll be a modern remake

Which leads me to my biggest issue that people don't get. This movie was a period piece and kinda has to be. So if you want to make a movie about a black chick with a rocket pack, then go make that movie and call it someth else. Cause it's not Rocketeer.

It's like remaking Batman with a chick. But you call her Brenda Wayne and give her the same origins as Bruce. The real Batgirl has her own origin, own issues, own motivation. And there's nothing wrong with that. But there's a difference between those two

Did anyone read the link? Unless I missed it, no one mentioned this:

Griffin and Kalil are partners in a new venture called Mortal Media and approached Taylor with the idea for the reboot.
