There was no way I was going to watch this in the theaters based on what people on this board was saying. I would catch it when it dropped on D-Plus so here my thoughts.

I'm glad I didn't pay theater prices to see this. It wasn't the "worst" MCU movie. I would put it on the same level as Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania.

Brie Larson's acting was by far the weakest part of the film. Wooden, no emotion and dull. Also, she looked like she lost a lot of weight to the point of looking unhealthy.

the actress that played Monica acting was ok but nothing special. The actress that played Kamala Khan breathed what little life there was to this snoozed fest.

Samuel L. Jackson needs to hang up the Nick Fury Boots as his age is really starting to show and is not enhancing MCU movies.

The plot was girl power all the way. Girl hero, girl villain...everything Disney is all about these days.

The FX were ok, but a little too cartoon-like in some places.

This is a D minus film. Brie Larson's lack of ability to command the role as lead actor was probably the worst part of the movie. A good actress could have helped this film a little bit.

I was bored Saturday, when it was raining all day. A friend has it on his Plex, so I held my nose and gave it a try.

I think putting it around Quantumania is a fair assessment. To me, the song/dance scene puts it below Quantumania (spoiler: the statement about song/dance is not a joke).

Larson's acting has always been a weak point in this series, I put part of it on the writing as well because they've written the character thus far as being a Mary Sue with a fairly generic personality.

That said, I saw a glimpse of missed potential at one point. Part of the story for Carol in this movie was that she didn't have to be alone. At the beginning of the movie when she is alone on the ship, you can almost see a glimpse of her being lonely. Instead of playing that up, they just skipped over it (this is an example of that writing I mentioned). There were a couple of scenes where I could see Brie injecting a little personality but it was far too little and way too late.

Monica's character is almost equally as bland. She's a very reluctant hero but the writing avoided doing any underscoring of this.

Kamala Kahn's actress was just the opposite. She was easily the most noticeable character because she was written with more personality than the other two lacked. With that, she was a bit over the top at times.

These imbalances didn't work to balance one another out, only to emphasize these disparities.

Jackson's Fury has been neutered tremendously since Phase 1. Seriously, what sort of "master spy" thing has he done since then? They've written him as being impressively being a step ahead of everyone else but the examples we've seen since Phase 1 has been the exact opposite.

The female villain was bland. They touched on a possibly interesting backstory but that was it. The actress was so over-the-top in some scenes I expected her to laugh like a Bond villain at times.

Another factor obvious in the writing is that the writers aren't using powers as a static thing with very specific limits, strengths and weaknesses, but mainly as a tool to drive action sequences and drama. Monica and Kamala are falling from thousands of feet up? No problem, even though they are scared Kamala can just create a magic-light-bubble-thingy and they crash into the ground with no problem. Let's forget that Kamala has routinely created these things many times where they just float in the air and have enough strength for her to stand on them without their even dipping.

But... at least there was a sufficiently diverse cast and that's always better than good writing. Right?

I don't necessarily disagree with anything you put, but I will expand on a couple of things.

Spoilers below:

My biggest issue with this is that she hasn't grown. The writers were given opportunities to have her show emotional growth, but chose to keep her stoic and somewhat introverted.

They glossed over this but tried to use it as a reconnecting point between her and Carol. It didn't work because they didn't put the work in to Monica's reluctance.

Agreed. But they put her "over the top" because she is a kid meeting her idol and even addressed it with her apologizing to Carol at one point. For me, this is a point for the writers. Not against.

The planet where they spoke by singing was dumb. Cringe dumb.

However, the montage where they were trying to figure out how their powers were intertwined worked for me and it had a lot to do with the song, Intergalactic.

The best thing about that movie was the cat and Kamala Kahn’s parents.

I agree. I was surprised they extended that as long as they did. For something like that it's common to rush the montage to just jump into the finale, but with that they took the time to show them messing up, then making progress, then messing up again, etc. It was a detail level in the story writing missing from other parts.

Daughter liked it.
A few scenes worked well

SPOILERS

Cat escape pod
Learning to use the shift in location issue
Fight at Kamala’s house (mainly due to her family).
Singing prince

The coherence was lacking. Nothing built upon the limited goodness. Production value was almost CW level. Acting, story all subpar.

I don’t know what they are trying to do with Bree. It’s not working. Is it her or the character or the director?

Kamala is the closest thing to being serviceable and she could barely lead a tv show.

The singing planet was so bad.
It was a one and done marvel movie for me. Like Eternals I don't need to see it again.

Like most of the MCU now the fastball is gone and they’re relying on their much worse off speed stuff

It took me two evenings to watch this sad movie.
So much wasted potential.
Felt like I was watching a ABC afternoon tv movie for teens.
Brie Larson has lost too much weight , she looks like she belongs on a drip and needs to eat 5 lbs of potato salad.

Singing planet = Flerken eating/barfing people = Screaming goats = simpleton Thor in Thor4 Bad

Why, just, why? None were funny or clever - plus it reduced the badass status of Flerkens. Did Goose just throw up all those Kree soldiers it “ate” in Captain Marvel at some point?

That girl that plays Kamala Khan is just a delight to watch. She's going to have a hell of a future as an actress if she has any range at all.

She really is. Seems like Marvel has been getting away from performers with charisma. This kid is fun to watch.

Whoever greenlit that for this script is an utter moron.

And the kid was quite the scene-stealer! I like her.

This film had massive reshoots, who knows what was originally intended. Good script and a bad director can equal a fricked up film.

I neither liked nor disliked the movie.

an army of Flurkin made the movie. I laughed at the idea of evacuating the station.

did the villain have Ronin's hammer from Guardians? the power of it looked like the power stone effects when she used it on the girl.

Watching now. It's so hard to give a crap about Captain Marvel or "Black Girl Magic."

Kamala Khan is one of the surprising highlights of the MCU after Thanos. The character sucks and I hate the character in literally everything else, but the actress is really endearing and steals every scene.

Looks healthy to me.
