I didn't read the book...
Saw it in 3d. My wife and I loved it. Best movie this year, imo

Just saw it and even though I haven't read the book I really enjoyed it. Visually amazing thought Damon did really well. Oh and sean bean didn't die an added bonus.

I did laugh at how Sean Bean was at another meeting of elrond.....lol

Yeah that was funny. I was hoping he would say he was boromir in that scenario

Good movie. A lot to squeeze in to 2+ hours, but overall well done.

2 and a half hours of my life I'll never get back. Damon. smug and Whiney. Ridiculous premise that the entire world would gather in the streets with white knuckles as the fate of one man hung in the balance.
When you have a work of fiction where the outcome is never in doubt, try to create a protagonist worth rooting for. Lots of acting talent wasted. Kristen Whig role a complete throwaway.

It did have a bit of a Michael Bay-type feel to it at times, if I'm honest.

I'd like to take my 11 year old daughter to see it today. Do you think it's too much? She's pretty mature.

Rated PG-13, contains mild cursing, but you can see they went to lengths to limit it. (Watney cursed like a sailor).
The biggest concern for kids IMO is that early in the movie there is a scene where he needs to self operate that might make a little girl squirm.
Gives himself a pain shot, then has to open the wound, remove metal deep inside, and then staple it shut.
And they show it all
Edit: Corrected rating.

They missed big time on the humor element of the book IMO. Flashes of it was there, but they skipped a lot of it.
I fricking knew they would frick this up

I probably wouldn't take my 11-year-old daughter to see it. There are a few F-bombs.
And it's PG-13, not PG.

I enjoyed it, but it felt like a very safe predictable movie. Pretty much felt like a Ron Howard type of movie.
Seemed to have a lot of throwaway characters that weren't really essential to the plot and I thought that Damon's crew was underutilized with the caliber of acting talent they had in Chastain and Pena.

My 11 year old can handle it.
It's hard to find movies we can all tolerate.

Just got out. Very surprised it didn't get a R rating. You could clearly see Damon's cock dangling between his legs in the nude shot.

Thank god animals wear underwear. Wouldn't want the little ones to notice genitalia....

I don't care, but it's pertinent to the conversation of ole' boy bringing his 11 year old princess to see it.

saw it last night. I enjoyed it.
I did think they cut out a lot of the struggles, but you still see a good bit. I liked all the bitching in the book about eating freeze dried potatoes for years. Or the Chinese realizing that helping NASA may ruin their space program.
The movie did a great job of getting most of the book to film, the added scene was nice too.
