I just finished up the first season of the last kingdom on Netflix. I really liked it and hope its coming back for another season (I have not gotten a chance to check). Does anyone on here watch the show? And if anyone on here has read the books, would it be worth it to read them after having seen season 1?

Can't tell you about the book, but there will be a season 2. NetFlix appears to have replaced BBC America in coproducing the show, LINK / so I don't know if that means they'll get it sooner or if it will be another 10 months (season 1 hit about 2 months ago IIRC.)

Hell yeah its worth reading them. The first season covers the first two books, but you should still read them. The 10th book comes out in about 2 weeks. They are quick, easy reads. Cornwell is great.

I have not read the books, but I've read about them a bit.

I like the show...

but is Uhtred one of the biggest idiots in history? He honestly drove me a bit insane with his pride and stupidity.

No. not at all. His arrogance sometimes gets him into trouble, but his intelligence and sheer ferocity bail him out. Esp as he gets older, he's rather brilliant as a military tactician. But that's why he's a great character, and here's where you need the books to really understand him. He's a heavy mix of aggression, intelligence, arrogance, and loyalty.

My favorite thing about Uhtred is he is unapologetically a medieval warlord. It's what he is, and what he always strives to be. None of the tiresome moral debates that seem to plague every character these days when it comes to violence.

There have been 9 books so far. Bernard Cornwell is my favorite author and this series is amazing. Definitely worth reading.

The show is fairly true to the books, although you'll realize the casting for Uhtred is not what you'd expect. The show is well done but would greatly benefit from a bigger budget. Probably if HBO didn't already have GoT it'd pick up this show. There's enough violence, intrigue, and romance to go around. Season 1 covered books 1 and 2. Season 2 is filming now and will cover books 3and 4 when it airs in 2017.

There were some production delays so we won't see season two till 2017.

Books are great, if you liked the show they're definately worth reading. Book 9 is due out in the next month or so. Cornwell's Arthur series is really good too. His main character in that series, Derfel Cadern, is very similar to Utrid.

I absolutely loved the Arthur series. It's far different from the traditional Camelot stories. Masterful blend of war, grit, ambiguous magic, intrigue, and a sense of sentimentality and the passage of time.

Derfel though similar to Uhtred lacked Uhtred's humor and belligerence. At times he seemed like nothing more than a plot device to keep the story moving. He didn't have good dialogue.

I think S2 is either in production or just finished filming. I'm guessing Netflix will have it streaming sometime in the Spring.

Father Beocca is such a badass

I need to read the books in between seasons. At least Bernard Cromwell releases books frequently unlike Fat Man!

Can't wait for season 2 to get here. Hopefully it will be more than 8 episodes like season 1 was.

Awesome. Pumped up for season 2. I'm definitely gonna start reading the books. Hopefully I can find them for cheap on my kindle. Thanks.
