Rewatching and damn forgot how good. Good cast. Characters. Story. Why doesn't it get more praise.

Its sort of the "forgotten" Cameron movie because it wasn't a monster success like his others. I liked it though. The effects were really good for the time.

The Abyss is such a great movie. It's one of those 'must stop on' cable movies. You forget what a unique true talent Cameron was before Titanic.

Cameron's run from 84-94 is simply incredible.

The Terminator (1984)
Aliens (1986)
The Abyss (1989)
T2 (1991)
True Lies (1994)

The Abyss is Totally looked over because as said it wasn't a gigantic hit like the others, plus the directors cut is the superior version.

The Abyss basically got Cameron hooked on CGI and he saw what he could do with it then he made T2 which is still some of the most revolutionary special effects ever.

Yep. The water alien probe was basically the prototype of the liquid metal terminator yet everyone remember the liquid metal as opposed to the water alien.

To be fair though, T2 was a GIGANTIC hit, so it far overshadows The Abyss, plus T1000 is a much more legendary character than the water scope thing.

And then he got more interested in effects than he did in telling stories

It still baffles me that Titanic and Avatar got as much acclaim as they did. Cameron is the greatest self promoter on the planet.

Titanic was just not entertaining for me. Avatar is beautiful, but he could have just made a CGI version of Fern Gully.

Um, that's basically what you got.

Yes the movies was visually stunning. But once you get past that it is a recycled storyline with really poor performances outside of Stephen Lang and about an hour too long.

Tremendous movie. I would argue Cameron's best original stand-alone. Ed Harris & M.E.Mastrantonio's best acting. Michael Biehn gets to play a bad guy.
The score was very, very good.

Never cared much for this movie until I saw the director's cut.

Criminal what the studio editors did. The director's cut was amazing and the story actually made sense.

I'm a big fan of The Abyss, but there are two cuts of the film: one that makes no sense whatsoever, and one that drags on forever. There's a great film within those two versions, it's just never been stitched together properly.

Ed Harris kills it in this movie.
