The second terminator was captured by the resistance, reprogrammed to protect John Connor, then sent back to the past. You do know the robots made more than one of each model, right?

Resistance captured and reprogrammed that particular terminator.

There was more then one T-800, The Resistance captured one, reprogrammed it, sent it to the same time the T-1000 went to.

yeah, the Terminator explains it to Jon in T2. He explains the entire mission. The Terminator T-800 is this

Resistance Infiltrator Prototype T-850 Model variant

T-800 model 888

Sounds like he's a sidewalk Terminator fan, actually. Or he's trolling, since that particular question was answered explicitly in the movie. Not hinted at, or suggested. Answered explicitly.

Or maybe he's an expert on Terminator trivia and is just wanting to take stock of the posters on the board by posing a question that any so-called Terminator fan should know. Now that I think about it, I'm sure it's what this is.

Honestly the entire terminator series makes no sense to me. Each time it's someone sent back to the past to kill someone before they do something. Which hasn't happened yet but will happen unless they kill them.

Guess I'm just dumb

The whole thing makes my head hurt. I still don't believe that Reece is J. Connor's dad or at least he wasn't at first. All the time travel stuff just gets confusing. I hear the new movie makes it even worse and there are tons of holes left unexplained. I'm not even going to try to watch it..

They should have stopped after the second one.

The first one's ending was just status quo.

The second one's ending, they apparently destroyed Cyberdyne and all evidence of terminators.

It does get rid of the "Kyle Reese is John Connor's father" paradox though.

Skynet and John Connor don't exist now.

Is it just me or are they playing the living shite out of this movie on cable? Seems like some combination of 1,2, and 3 come on everyday.

not really, they covered this in T3: Rise of the Machines. The Arnold terminator tells them it doesn't matter what they do, judgement Day will come, it is inevitable, anything they do in the past only delays it from coming.
