With yesterday's numbers, it had less than 2 million to make before grossing more than Avatar. It is reported that it made that during morning sales. By the end of next weekend, it should also make enough to beat Avatar's adjusted for inflation numbers.
China will finally begin showing it this weekend. I no clue how big of an impact China will have, but it's numbers will need to be huge to give the movie a chance to beat Avatar's worldwide 2.7 billion

It won't beat Avatar

If you mean domestically, it has already happened. If you are referring to worldwide, I doubt it will happen, unless China does some major work. It will definitely make more than 2 billion worldwide, but 2.7 might be too much to ask.

It took Avatar something like 8 months to set the domestic record. Star Wars will have beaten it in about 20 days.
China's box-office record is $390M, and Star Wars is not a known entity there. So I don't expect China to put Star Wars over Avatar worldwide. Star Wars will surpass Titanic's $2.2B to get to second place all time.

Adjusted for inflation it's not even top 20

Plus they already have some pretty decent cams out there, so a lot of the casual movie goers have already seen it if they wanted to see it.

Amazing that a 40 year old movie is still top ten.

Why do some posters constantly speak out of their arses on this site without making an effort to provide evidence for their false claims? With Wednesday included, it is in the top 20. After this weekend, it will be in the top 15.

TFA would need to blow out all time box office records in China and India to have a shot Avatar. Unfortunately, I can't see it happening.

Avatar and Titanic where out in theaters for a long time.
I know I saw Titanic in theaters on a date the weekend it came out, then saw it again on another date after that 6-month relationship ended. I can't remember a movie having a longer run than Titanic.
Avatar was another that was out for months.

pretty impressive to have two top five all time movies and three top ten all time movies in the same year.
( I think if you look at international you have four with Fast 7 being up there)

Why did so many people see Avatar?
I don't get it.

It was hyped as a technological revolution for the 3D effects, and everyone was pumped about something new. It was the most immersive 3D experience I've ever had at the movies, but the story was awful.

I saw it once in theaters, which was in 3D. I appreciate the technology involved (the 3D aspect was amazing) and the world created was cool to see, but that was the only thing that was good about it to me.
