He is ostensibly one of the main characters in the new Trilogy. A lot of screen time was spent on him.

But what is his role in the events to come?

Many of the other characters fit into boxes that can be checked:

Poe Dameron: ace pilot, our connection to the Resistance. Some Han in him
Kylo Ren: obvious evil/dark side character. Conflicted, family connection to the light side
Rey: light side Jedi in training, main protagonist

Finn is brave and good. He is loyal to Rey and Poe. He's a good man. Naive. Trained soldier. But he's not a rogue like Han. He's not a leader of the Resistance like Leia. He doesn't seem to be Force sensitive or a Jedi like Luke/Rey/Kylo.

TFA closely resembled ANH and the OT. Finn doesn't fit the archetypes set forth there. I'm having a hard time figuring out where he goes from here and what he does going forward. Thoughts?

I am interested in knowing more about the assimilation process these new storm troopers go through and how he was able to fight it off.

I'd imagine Poe's sidekick. Seems like the best use and direction for the character, and allows us to see more of Poe.

He's basically Shaggy from Scooby-doo. Have no clue what he could be going forward besides a potential love interest for Rey.

Yep. He and Poe seem set up to partners. They clearly went out of the way to create a bond between them.

He's just a Poe boy, from a Poe family.

I think it's more likely that Poe is his mentor and helps him become...whatever he becomes.

Hopefully they kill him off. His infatuation with Rey is annoying.

Poe has already been established as more than a hotshot pilot, as he was the one sent out to find Luke. So we'll see more "special agent" missions from him, I'm guessing.
Finn is the guy with the First Order background, and a guy shown ready to make his move if he feels the chance is there (by breaking Poe out and escaping with him).

I see the two as a buddy team, sent into dangerous territory. A lot of the Han/Luke pairing we saw in the first Star Wars, that went implied but often neglected in the sequels.

I'm curious to see Chewie's role going forward. Will he be Rey's pilot and bodyguard, or Leia's, or will he be responsible for Poe and Finn?

To provide diversity.

And urban-sounding catch phrases.

He's an awful character

Maybe he frees the brainwashed storm troopers from the First Order. He's a symbol that freedom is possible.

Or something about how you don't have to be special to make a stand. Though hopefully I'm wrong. That theme is a little stale.

If they make his purpose to cut off the soldier supply of the First Order, that would be pretty sweet.

I don't think he's an awful character at all. I'm just not crazy in him as anything other than a good friend to Rey when it comes to any love interests.

He could be the Han Solo replacement given the comedic lines they gave him and a potiential love interest with Rey

Remember Han was holding the fort down for the rebels while Luke was training. I could see a similar job for him.

In the next movie, we will have 2 groups.

1. Rey, Luke, Chewie, and R2 going on their mission

2. Leia, Poe, bb88, Finn, c3p0 doing rebel shite.

They all meet together again in the 3rd movie.

Hopefully he fades away but they will try and make him the new Han Solo.
