They need to fit into place for the larger DC plans. I have no doubt Leto will be a major factor in the stand alone batman flick.
I know everyone wants them to be marvel but they have set up a darker universe to separate themselves and they should stay consistent within that.

Most Marvel fans would. However, DC and Marvel are two different beasts trying to do two different things with their shared universes. One wants to be light-hearted, fun, and campy. The other wants to be dark, fun, and melodramatic.

My sort-of beef with the look and feel of these DC movies is that Frank Millar releases one graphic novel 30 years ago and every creator associated with the company, especially the film division (sans Superman Returns), decides to go in that direction. Especially Snyder. He only knows one tone.
This is a big part of what makes All Star Superman such a great book. It's refreshingly true to the spirit of the original character.

Well, from what the BvsS trailer implies, I think the logical move for the stand alone Batman film would have to include the Joker. He wouldn't be the main antagonist, but he'd be pretty prominent in it.

What's the issue exactly? That's the plan that they decided as a company as a whole to go to seperate itself from it's main competitors

That's why I said "major player" and not the main villian
Regardless I think Leto is the new Joker for however this era of DC movies lasts

I just find it weird. I don't have a serious issue, I'll watch the movie and I follow much more DC than Marvel. It's just odd to me that the Millar books and Vertigo titles hit it big at the turn of the 90's and the company is largely frozen in time with that image, now 30 years old.
My real beef with the company is that they reset continuity every 3 years, "for real this time"
