Make good movies and you won't have to worry about it

quote:

"Insiders close to both films blame Rotten Tomatoes, with Pirates 5 and Baywatch respectively earning 32% and 19% Rotten. The critic aggregation site increasingly is slowing down the potential business of popcorn movies. Pirates 5 and Baywatch aren’t built for critics but rather general audiences, and once upon a time these types of films — a family adventure and a raunchy R-rated comedy — were critic-proof. Many of those in the industry severely question how Rotten Tomatoes computes the its ratings, and the fact that these scores run on [the movie-ticket buying site] Fandango (which owns RT) is an even bigger problem."

I'd have to agree....
Use to you'd watch a trailer and either wanna see it or not.....but now a lot of people let a bunch of nerds trying to make a name for themselves dictate whether they should see a certain film or not

Critics are snobs who think Bird Man is more entertaining than Pirates 5.....

I don't know why anyone wanting to pay to go see either of those movies would give a shite what the rotten tomato critic scores were anyway?

Well, I'm an avid movie goer, and I didn't care to see either of these movies. Besides, RT has bashed the Transformers movies (at least the last three) pretty hard and those still made a ton of money. So there goes that theory.

They're not totally wrong. Those tomato splats are everywhere. On my movie apps, on my Cox Contour screen...

Not a problem when a movie is really bad, but there are some middle of the road movies that get branded to be as bad as Deuce Bigalow II, just by having a splat next to their name.

Let me help you out there Mr. Conspiracy Theory Movie Industry Man

1 Critic liked your movie, another critic did not like your movie:

50% score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Hope this helps explain that devious site's complicated algorithm created to keep your movies from making money.

But the opposite is true too, movies that would have skirted by into obscurity are brought to light by strong reviews

exactly. people will always harp on it for their failures, instead of making a better movie. look at the DC movies. they grossed over a billion dollars despite their terrible ratings. was a 5th pirates movie really needed, especially if its just a bland story with the same formula?

Critics are becoming snobs

If you look at the audience score for these movies it's vastly different than the critics scores

Baywatch 20% vs 70%
Pirates 31% vs 72%

you can add King Author movie to that list 29% vs 79%

Then you look at best picture winners

Moonlight 98% vs 80%
Birdman 91% vs 71% (edited originally had 81% here and that was wrong)

you can see that critics have lost touch with what audiences like. It sucks because you miss out on enjoyable movies that won't get follow ups because they got a low tomatoes score

John Carter comes to mind.

Meh. It's just the modern version of Roeper and Ebert. If you want to see a movie just go see it. Who cares what the 4chan basement dweller says.

Rotten Tomatoes has been fair to other R-rated comedies. The studio should have done a better job making Baywatch.

21 Jump Street - 85%
22 Jump Street - 84%
Neighbors -73%
Neighbors 2 - 62%
Bad Moms - 58%

This is fair Get Out is a good example. I would have never considered going to see that but for the great scores

I really don't let RT or critics drive my theater watching habits.

It has gotten ridiculously expensive to go to a movie (concessions etc) and often times other patron's behavior make me not want to go.

That plus 65" 4K HDtv with surround system at home makes the wait tolerable.

Sorry. Autocorrect didn't like Roeper apparently.

A regular person that goes out of their way to see a poorly reviewed movie and then rate it is generally someone that is going to give it a favorable review, imo. There is also a "defiance factor" there.

Exactly, if those movies were truly being well received by the general audience like those scores suggest, then why are they flopping?
