Given how the end of Season One seemed to tie up pretty much all of the loose ends that were out there, I was afraid that Stranger Things was going to be an American Horror Story-style show where each season exists independently of the others. I am glad to find out that is not the case.

Interesting that it's called "Stranger Things 2" instead of saying "Season 2."

2 means season 2, it's just how they styled it

It may also be a callback to movies of that time (and even up until the last 10-15 years). Sequels these days don't often have numbers in them any more.
