Yeah I get that I now. I just finished ROTJ two minutes ago. I now have the answers to 1 and 3 just by finishing out the original trilogy. 2 is still not answered in the movies but many here have answered it for me. I'm about to fire up TFA.

That would have been great fuel for the pro-Imperial crowd. I wouldn't be surprised if Joe Blow moisture farmer wasn't better off under the Empire than the Republic (except for the whole Owen and Beru incident).

Not reading the thread but Luke knew Obi Wan prior to A new hope. Obi Wan kept watch over him and to everyone in the community he was known as old Ben, a hermit. Luke asks his uncle if Obi Wan Kenobi from the R2 message could possibly mean old Ben Kenobi.

Negative. In between III and IV, Vader hunts down all of the Jedi except for Ben and Yoda (although there could have been more in hiding not talked about). Vader just knocked the Jedi off their high horse.

Abrams "lifted" strings of stories from the Expanded Universe despite Disney stating the EU was no more. We can assume it's possible he was with someone like a Mara Jade who was murdered or died as a result of Ben's actions which led Luke into self-exile.
