The simple answer is: George Lucas. Reason, logic, and continuity went out the window. Anyone trying to find a logical answer is trying to retrofit Lucas's complete lack of care.

Upvote. That's why this started off as a good thread discussing ambiguity in the originals and then got derailed by Lucas-apologists trying to examine the prequels with the same scrutiny.

We'll all be better off when we abandon those movies and any consequences that they may have on an otherwise interesting universe.

It seems like the new trilogy is doing just that.

Don't forget, Palpatine had the high ground against Yoda.

Of course she is force sensitive. They hint at it as early as Empire when they are escaping Cloud City and she feels Luke in danger and forces Lando to turn around.

Has the argument really devolved into Lucas was dumb because he didn't have Yoda try and push the column instead of stop its movement? There is plenty to criticize Lucas for, but I mean come on. At the end of the day, Lucas wanted Dooku to get away so Anakin could square off with him again. If THAT is your big complaint, then that movie wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was.

All i'm saying is we assume Yoda is the biggest badass in the galaxy, but he had two opportunities to prove that and he didn't.
Palpatine was a lot more powerful than we were lead to believe from the original trilogy, at least to me. That's all.
Yoda spends all this time meditating and he couldn't see that THE Sith Lord is right under his nose for years?

I took away from the prequels that Palpatine is the biggest badass in the galaxy, not Yoda.

Well, to the Jedi he is the biggest badass. Dooku was no scrub either, let's not forget that he was Yoda's apprentice. Regardless, if Dooku doesn't bolt, I think most would agree Yoda would have bested him with the saber. At that point in the fight, he seemingly had the upper hand imo.

Yea, I think that is just more how you took things. By the time you watch ROTJ, Palpatine had become pretty revered, especially if he was controlling Vader. Then, you have probably the most impressive show of force ability of anyone in the entire trilogy at the end. After that, I knew he was the most powerful.

Well, I mean this was covered, and also adds credence to how powerful Palpatine is.

Pretty good take away. I mean what he was able to accomplish was pretty monumental.

Star Wars Episode V

the title of the film is "The Empire Strikes Back" GTFO with that episodic bullshite.

quote:

1. When yoda is talking to Luke and Obi Wan, yoda mentions something about Luke not being the only hope. I think it goes something like Obi Wan says Luke you are our only hope and yoda says not our only one. Who is yoda talking about?

this is the moment when you realize that luke is super important beyond him being the protagonist. everything is riding on his shoulders, but right after we learn that, we're teased that they have someone on the back burner, a hail mary...return of the jedi reveals who it is, and it totally ruins this excellent moment from a great film. The person who is revealed to be the other was not intended to be the person revealed in "jedi"

quote:

2. Why does Luke call Obi Wan Ben?

either obi wan was a title or moniker he gave himself or ben was an alias he used in hiding...it's never revealed and that's why I love the first 2 movies so much. they don't bother explaining these kinds of details that aren't relevant to the plot and it makes it mysterious...it leaves things to your imagination...for instance, did luke train to do what he did in the ice monster cave or did he listen to the force? did luke try and kill himself at the end of 'empire" or was he trying to do what he did?

quote:

3. Does Leia have the force?

yes, which is even lamer because she doesn't do anything in "return of the jedi" that's so lame even before you consider that if luke turns or killed, then she's the last hope for the entire galaxy

Mace Windu was easily the biggest badass. He defeated Palpatine and then Anakin gets a cheap shot in which leads to his death. Yes, yoda did eat the lightning shite but Windu owned Palpatine.

Oh and because BLM

Don't lump me into column pushing arguments, sir. I was merely informing them the argument won't make sense when you compare original trilogy logic to prequel trilogy logic. Lucas threw out all of his own concepts and truths and just wanted to make a CGI moving picture. THAT is why Lucas is dumb. He destroyed his own creation. So there was no point in arguing about it.

Palpatine was letting him do that. It was all part of his plan to get Anakin on his side.

It always amazes me how people never caught on to this. (Though I'm assuming Farva's post was sarcasm)

The prequels had a ton of issues, but they really got some things right, especially with Palpatine. That whole sequence is great from start to end as we see Palpatine transform from politician to Sith Lord. That whole demonic leap he does to the "Unlimited Power" part were very well portrayed.

The Dark Side was rising and clouding the Light Side's predictive powers. It went in reverse in Return of the Jedi.

Speaking of the Emperor, we always saw him in the original trilogy doing evil, badass shite but he still had political duties, too, right? I'm mad that we never got a scene of him reading to schoolchildren or boasting how his tax cuts allowed some single mother to open a bakery.
