And the Nimoy "strategy" failed spectacularly.

I wouldn't say that. I would have seen the movie regardless, but as an extremely casual Star Trek watcher I enjoyed having Nimoy in the films. Yes it was a bit contrived, but for those of us who aren't trekkies it made it enjoyable.

It is going to be fun to see Star Wars integrated into every corporate sponsorship imaginable this year.

Heard we're getting the trailer on the stream and a official movie poster today as well.

It didn't need Nimoy, and the time travel aspect ended up being a catastrophe. I'm sure they thought they were being clever in doing that, giving them the ability to regurgitate old plots and characters without having to think of anything original, but the result was a total clusterfrick.

That's why my enthusiasm is lacking. I think I'm all sequel/remake/reboot/adaptation-ed out, and that's all most of them can come up with these days.

But that's what they're doing.
at this point, the only thing we can do is speculate. We're both making educated assumptions I suppose, but they're assumptions.

we won't know until we see it. I will say as a general rule of thumb it is not a good sign when they cast established stars in a science fiction (or science fantasy, whatever)movie. Lucas was even hesitant to cast ford even though he wasn't a star, he was too well known.

who are the known commodities in this film (beyond the original cast) versus the known commodities of the prequels (or even 2009 star trek)

gwendoline Christie
serkis
lupita

liam neeson
ewan McGregor
Samuel l Jackson
jimmy smit

you can't name one box office draw on the first one, and I see 2 big ones on the second one.

simon pegg (nerd cred same as nimoy)
eric bana
Winona Ryder
Bruce Greenwood
Jennifer Morrison
Eomer from Lord of the Rings

Clifton Collins Jr (I had to look up his name but his face is very recognizable (slim chance you didn't recognize him in the movie)

Zachary quinto
zoe saldana

now this list isn't big on box office appeal or big names (from a 2009 perspective) but they were all instantly recognizable

Yea seeing a real live BB8 droid is pretty cool. Actual props are so much better than CGI
