Spinoff(kinda): who were you more sympathetic to in Jaws, Hooper or Quint

Both characters are written extremes and form a tension filled rivalry (supposedly Dreyfus and shaw also could t stand one another).
Hooper: the rich, soft, scientist who does t understand how the real world works. He is idealistic and willing to explore multiple avenues of a solution. Basically book smart
Quint: rough, uncultured, a mercenary. He knows how to get stuff done. But he will bring the world done in the process. Street smart
I think Brody is the every man/middle man in how we view their rivalry.

Never really thought of them that way.
Hooper is rich, but skilled. He is young but knows his stuff - he is just more progressive, whereas Quint is stuck in the past, a relic - his past-its-prime boat is full of old equipment . . . and older memories.

I'm too stoked about The Shallows to remember.

Quint
Hooper was a smartass who almost got everyone killed by being a stuck-up, smarmy know-it-all.
He didn't value anything Quint had to say and challenged him at every turn. Quint served while Hooper was burning bras.

And Quint was stubborn enough to break the boat. Love both characters lol

Quint got himself killed when he destroyed the radio and refused to realize they were in over their head.
Both Hooper and Quint paid for their pride but quint Went captain ahab because of it.

Hooper was more than book smart. He definitely carried his weight on board. His pedigree was an extreme from quint however. And quint despite his experience was ultimately reckless to a fatal extent.

I found out about pussy juice from that book. I was in 5th grade and there was an awful line in there where Mrs. Brody is imagining dying in a car wreck while Hooper was fingering her and she imagines dying spread legged with juice all over her legs.
I read some stuff way too young.

Growing up, Hooper. Quint grew on me as I got older.
Hooper has a different fate in the book, if I remember.

They both died horribly in the book, so it's hard to say. In the movie, I choose Quint because he was a poor man who was eaten by a huge shark and Hooper just paddled back home to his comfy life.

Many, many of these troikas in film and television are drawn broadly along the Freudian Id, Ego and Superego ethical concepts of personality - so they form a "complete" consciousness.
In Jaws, it goes:
Superego: Hooper - Idealistic, rational, "perfectionist"
Id: Quint - Instinctive, driven by passions (lust, hunger, rage, anger), "hedonist"
Ego: Brody - Tries to balance the Id and the Ego, often the face we put out to the world as the face representing the person under normal circumstances, "realist"

Definitely Hooper.
He's the one who can explore every option even under intense pressure.
Quint cracked under the pressure.

Why did Quint destroy the radio? That was dumb. I'd have thrown him overboard and headed for shore.

Quint. Notice the opening scene for Quint in the town hall. The town didn't like him or understand him. We were intrigued but yet afraid of him in a way. Then as the film progressed, we grew sympathy for him.
This film and script is a masterpiece. Also, incredible performances by all involved. My top 5 films of all time.
