Spinoff: How did Norm not get to host "The Late, Late Show"?

I've come to the conclusion that Letterman wanted Norm fairly early on to take over his show once he inevitably retired. There was no bigger champion for Norm's career than Letterman. Now Norm has pissed off so many executives in Hollywood that it's nothing short of a miracle that he's still given gigs outside of stand-up.
But seriously, his only competition would have been Seth Meyers, who I'm fairly certain he'd curb stomp in the ratings. Yes Norm getting the Late Show was a long shot considering how divisive and defiant of authority he is, but in this day and age with a midnight slot, who cares what he would have done? Just bleep out anything inappropriate he did. The guy is in the top 5 of greatest guests ever as basically any talk show host who has had them on their show would say. He was always gold on any program he was on.
Instead they give it to someone no one knows named James Corden. Norm has been proven to be a popular draw, and I'm sure Letterman completely backed him to host the program after his own. Aside from maybe Robin Williams, has there ever been a talk show guest as good as him who has not had the opportunity to host a talk show (save his podcast of course)? Comedians and rival talk show hosts alike would be fighting to get on his show just to lib off of him being the host.
So is there any reason he didn't get it besides pissing off almost every entertainment executive? It's a no brainer that he'd get fantastic ratings and would be safe in the midnight slot. There is no other reason he didn't get that job that he would have killed. I also think this may have been a reason he was tearing up with Letterman, knowing he was chosen by him, but his own comedic genius fricked him on getting into Letterman's seat.

Based on what? I don't think he's that popular with the general public and even at a late timeslot, networks still want someone fairly safe.

He's got Seth Meyers to deal with, and that's it. I feel pretty confident that Norm could beat him. Seth Meyers isn't all that respected even by the public at large, while Norm is one of the most respected comedians in the business. I don't think many people said to themselves once Meyers got that gig "Now I have to tune into it!" People would certainly get that from Norm.
Hell, Kimmel got his job due to his appearances on Letterman, and I think Norm clearly has him beat in that regard.
And do you think he's a worse bet than a Gotham City Commissioner?

Kimmel got his job from The Man Show. Seth Myers was already well known from SNL. Norm hasn't been on a popular show or movie in a long time. Hardcore comedy fans may love him, but I don't think he's that popular among the general public which is all that matters.

That was part of the reason, but Kimmel got the call due to his appearance on Letterman to host a show for ABC. Kimmel was a risk since he was seen as highly masochistic and a very brutal comic. Kimmel and especially Conan were both bigger risks than Norm would be in the environment.

And I don't think he was all that great. Yes he hosted Update, but I can't name a great character Meyers did at SNL. He's a simply boring choice, especially after Meyers said that he didn't have a joke for Caitlyn Jenner and how great of a country he lived in that they no longer had to joke about it again. Norm would have eaten him alive if he were his rival over that, and Jerry Seinfeld (of all people) actually came onto Meyers show just to call him out for his bullshite.

You're not thinking about the current environment though. Where do people predominantly watch these shows these days? It's Youtube. Norm busting a celebrity's balls or him and his buds bullshitting would be Youtube gold. Millennials would eat him up, way more than what's his name. I'm looking through his Youtube channel, and Corden doesn't have that many views. I don't see why he's a better pick than Norm.

Seth Meyers is horrible.

This,
Norm has also had many shots at Network and cable television programs, all that bombed.
I like the guy, but general audiences don't really care for him all that much.

Remember Sports Show with Norm MacDonald? Hilarious show. Totally Norm being Norm. No one watched and it was cancelled. As much as I love Norm, I don't think he's loved or followed by the vast majority of the viewing public. In fact his humor alienates a great deal of people. As great as he'd be in the role, he's not someone that's going to bring in ratings (based on his long list of mainstream failures).

But has be been given ones where he can actually interview, something he'd done pretty damn good at?
And the Norm Show got 3 seasons and 54 episodes, which isn't by any means disastrous.

Yeah but we are talking 15 years ago, and it spent that last season on Friday nights.
I think if he was given something on HBO, that might find an audience.

And I just looked up Sports Show and he averaged 1 million viewers an episode despite cancellation. I don't see how either of his shows are prescient to not give him a shot at the Late Late Show.

Norm is a weird dude. Whose to say he would be interested in something like that. He doesn't seem like a guy that would want to work 5 nights a week with old material that's been done 5 times already that night on different shows

Besides the part about hardcore comedy fans loving him, how's that different from James Corden?

I really like Norm. The best of his comedy is really really good. But he's not a workhorse IMO and doesn't have the energy to pretend to have a good time when he's not enthused about being there. That's fine as a guest when you can appear on Letterman or Stern and just kinda be funny by being a dick - but can wear thin on an audience (as Letterman sometimes did).
I completely get Letterman championing Norm because a younger Letterman had more in common with Norm than just about anyone else I can think of - his biting sense of humor tinged with mean and sense of the ridiculousness of his industry is not just a pretense. It would also be about as close as you'd like to come to imitating the original "Late Night with David Letterman" sensibility of the 80s. But executives hate it and audiences often go for softer fare (as Norm has seen with prior efforts he was given).

Classic OML thread.
"Here's a topic and what I think about it; let's discuss..... Just kidding."

I like Norm too, but I'm not sure the general public feels that way

It was great IMO. But apparently everyone outside of a few of us didn't care for it.

You answered your question in the first paragraph.
