Good news is they will play the original multiple times.

I am pretty sure they will try to modernize it and make it terrible.

I hope not. That usually doesn't end well. War of the Worlds comes to mind.

The remake of War of the Worlds is better than the original in nearly every way. It is a misunderstood classic, and one of the darkest, most batshit insane Hollywood blockbusters of all time. That is a genuinely great film. Not good for Sunday afternoon, I mean great like it is Spielberg's best film aside from ET.

But yeah... this remake is gonna suck.

Yeah, my post was a little confusing. I meant modernizing it from the source material. Modernizing War of the Worlds was a mistake IMO.

Damn, that's high praise. I thought it was pretty bad.

Yeah, I LOVE the War of the Worlds remake. But I do get your point: updating Papillion is ridiculous. The whole point is that they were on a deserted island in the middle of nowhere. The prison colony was low tech by design. And based on a real place.

The low tech makes the story more believable. Add in cell phones, security cameras, etc and you lose some of that. It's easier to poke holes and call bullshite.

That was my main gripe with modernizing War of the Worlds. What made the book believable was the gap between Martian weaponry and Earth weaponry - heat rays and chemical weapons vs cannon balls. It became much less believable when you set the conflict in the 2000s.

Do they want younger actors that they recognize?

Steve friggin' McQueen. If they don't recognize him, then they need to get to where they do.

What's next... remake Towering Inferno because they don't recognize McQueen, Paul Newman, Lorne Green and Charlton Heston (wait... those two were from Earthquake, not Towering Inferno.. they'll remake it as well, won't they?)?

I just somehow came across the fact that this movie was being remade. I was going down some IMDB rabbit hole where I was looking at the cast of the new Robin Hood movie, saw that this chick named Eve Hewson was in it, thought she was smoking hot, look at her credits list, and saw this...

Papillon is an incredible movie, and like nearly everyone else here, I think there is absolutely no reason to remake this. I am 32, saw the original when I was probably 28 or 29, and loved it. I am intrigued, however, to see Rami Malek's take on the Degas character.

Yeah, that's a story that needs to be redone.

Well they are remaking Overboard the 45th ranked film of 1987 so you have that going for you.

Wow... wanna vomit.. It's like they gave up before starting when the best they could land is Rami Malek and Charlie Hunnan to portray the Hoffman and McQueen roles. So, next just get Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner to play O'toole and Sharif's roles in a remake of Lawrence of Arabia.

Hell why stop at Papillon lets just remake The Godfather, Saving Private Ryan, Jaws or Shawshank Redemption to name a few. The question is, is any movie off limits from a Hollywood perspective to be remade? I am starting to think not.
