THE NATIONAL REVIEW WEIGHS IN

quote:

It may be the most vile and contemptible motion picture ever released by one of the major Hollywood studios.

quote:

The film reboots for a second half whose even more egregious lack of appeal can scarcely be overstated. To call it “Better Homes and Gardens meets Apocalypse Now, with a soupçon of Rosembary’s Baby” would probably make it sound much more fun than it actually is. To experience the final half-hour is to understand what it must feel like to be a clump of broccoli in a Cuisinart. Loud, extravagant, and obnoxious, Mother is the kind of film that makes you want to walk out, demand your money back, then file for a restraining order that would forbid the director from coming within 500 miles of any filmmaking equipment again

kinda want to see it now

this is kinda funny as i heard it has a strong pro-life sentiment in it. don't know how that's possible, but it's what i've heard.

Characters have no names in mother!, which is the first sign of exactly how pretentious this movie will be.

There are limits to how far one is willing to follow Aronofsky down his lunatic rabbit holes. I might humbly submit that that limit is mother!

An infuriating exercise in cacophonous style over substance.

Darren Aronofsky's self-pitying cinematic rending of garments is repulsive, transparent, and pointless. A grotesquely wrapped gift box of utter banality.

That's the most damning review...when you're telling the audience that the movie is dull and tiresome despite the promise of shocking or interesting.

I can't wait for all of the people who complained that "It" wasn't scary enough to complain that this one "goes too far".

I've got a hunch that this is just to drum up interest and get people to go see it.

What could be so controversial or vile about an anti-abortion movie.

I disagree. Love Arnofsky and his work and I know this will be another I love.

Damn, that says a lot coming from him. I'm intrigued to say the least.

I'm a little surprised Jennifer Lawrence did this type of a movie

She took pics of her gaped balloon knot. I don't think anything is out of bounds for her.

This kind of review guarantees I'm gonna see a movie.

From just reading this thread, I'm expecting the plot to be Lawrence living in a pro-life environment that forces her to carry a baby to term but for some reason (out of spite or because it's a demon), she eats it after she gives birth.

I'm getting nothing from the trailer. I know no more now than I did before I watched it.

Apparently the trailer sells this as an intense horror/thriller but its nothing close to that. I would say what the ultimate message is but I don't want to give spoilers. It's lame as hell though from what I read

Yeah, you can read the spoilers...

The movie sounds awful - and Lawrence said she'd never do a movie like that again and only did it because she's dating the director.

"I got a script, and I read it, and threw it across the room and told him (Aronofsky) he had a severe psychological problem.

I mean they make it sound like I spit on your grave territory. The explanation of the film doesn't even make any sense when you read the spoilers.

I don't get why people willingly read spoilers

Also, reading something and seeing something can be very different. If someone were to read the plot of Reqiuem it wouldn't be near the same thing as actually watching the movie

Yeah, I read the spoilers and people are going to be pissed given the way they're advertising this.

You did this exact same stuff with Dunkirk, picking out a review and deciding it's not good before seeing it

Once I read the advertising for the movie was selling something completely different from what the movie actually was I went ahead and read the spoilers. Glad I did because that would have been $12 poorly spent.

Just got home. It was AWFUL. I hate it when directors try to be too clever by half when portraying their "vision". Being edgy and cryptic might be enough to get JLaw in the sack, but it makes for shitty storytelling.
