Jan Hooks, who worked alongside some of the biggest "Saturday Night Live" stars ... died Thursday ... TMZ has learned. She was 57.

We've learned she passed away this morning in New York City. Sources tell us Jan had been battling a serious illness.

Jan was part of the 'SNL' cast from 1986-91 ... the same time as Chris Farley, Mike Myers, Phil Hartman, Dana Carvey and Dennis Miller ... and was most famous for being half of the Sweeney Sisters ... and also for her impressions of Sinead O'Connor and Hillary Clinton.

She most recently played a part on "30 Rock."

R.I.P.

She was a cornerstone of that cast, & since we've been talking about funny (& not) ladies - her diner skit w/Baldwin was one of my absolute favorites.

I always thought that she and Nora Dunn were underrated for thier looks back in the SNL days. Looked brutal on 30 Rock for her only being in her early 50's (I'd still give it to Dunn), but maybe the sickness had something to do with it. That and she was supposed to be trashy, so the makeup department didn't do her any favors.

One of the more nonchalantly hilarious people of that generation.

Damn she was under rated but one of the funniest females they ever had on there. Part of the best era of SNL (late 80s - early 90s) IMO.

I agree with you on Hooks back in the day, but Nora Dunn? Then and now, although she did age better than Jan, did, no question.

(Dunn wasn't that funny, either - one of the weaker members of the cast back then.)

Can't find a clip but that scene of her and Phil Hartman dancing would be a good tribute to the both of them. Where she's old and thinks back to being younger.
