Maybe they would buy more comics if not every depiction of women in comics was so demeaning and insulting. As long as there is a need for the Hawkeye Initiative, then the blame for not enough female readership is on the comics industry. It's not like there are a lot of girls or anything. Why would you want to market to that audience?

I hear that before the Marvel panel, there was a one hour presentation on feminist representation in the comic industry. And since seats are first come first serve, people who wanted to see the Marvel stuff had to sit through a one hour lecture on what a shite job comics do regarding female characters.

That alone makes me love Comic Con. Well done, scheduler.

They aren't all demeaning and it isn't as if they haven't tried over the years.

Most of the famous female superheroes aren't supported by the female audience.

Batgirl
Batwoman
Wonder Woman
Black Widow
Huntress
Capt. Marvel
Miss Marvel
Catwoman
Psylocke
Sara Pezzini
Elektra
Supergirl
Raven

And the list goes on and on. I highly doubt female comic fans keep those series going.

Female superheroes are there and more popular than ever. They try to give them their own series runs, but if people don't buy them, they are gonna cancel them.

Don't get me wrong, some of my favorite comic leads are female, but it is dumb to say they haven't been trying to reach out to females for years.

I would like to see more female superhero movies. Give me WW, Psylocke, Batwoman, etc., movie done right.

They cater to their audience.

Like I said, they have been trying to reach out. Look at the new Miss Marvel. She is a Muslim high school student. No sexual undertones at all. That would be weird. The comic is actually really good as well.

The new Black Widow run is also great and devoid of any sexualization.

I expect the new Thor to have the same impact. It'll be talked about by feminists and then things will return to the way they've always been.

I do agree they are making progress. But we are talking about an industry whose target market is teenage boys, which leads to a lot of stupid over-sexualization of characters (Psylocke is actually one of the more egregious historical examples - she went from a conservative and modest British lady to a sleek Asian-ish killer who wear next to nothing.). We're into the gimmick casting era, which comes before actually making powerful female characters whose first attribute isn't "I'm a girl". It's progress, but the list of legitimately interesting, well-rounded female characters in the superhero universe is still rather small.

And it was funny that Comic Con made a bunch of Marvel fanboys sit through the lecture. Probably the people who most needed to hear it, and were least likely to listen.

They no longer target teenage boys. Their target audience is made up of adult men that have been reading for one to four decades.

There definitely is a lot of oversexualization, but it isn't as if that just happened and it pushed all the female fans out of the market. The reason it happened is because there were no female fans.

Hey! She has always been Asian. You trying to say that a Brit can't be Asian as well? fricking racist.

I will admit her costume has gotten skimpier over the years though.

The real problem is, how do you approach this? Should we make fat female superheroes to avoid over-sexualizing the characters? Should the character be a hardcore feminist?

I can damn near guarantee that those comics wouldn't sell.

You know no one payed any attention to that lecture.

Sort of. Adult men tend to buy the trade paperbacks and compendiums, not the cheap monthly books. There still, of course, are lifetime comic buyers who still get every issue, but those monthlies are aimed at hooking teenage boys. They sell adults the books of multiple issues, gathered in one edition. Or, if they are selling them a monthly to adults, it's the prestige titles that aren't as superhero-y. DC are master at this. (And they still put Sin City in trade paperback -- and that mammoth hardback they now have which weighs about 300 pounds)

Actually, comic sales are booming on the electronic market now. I buy mine through Comixology on my iPad.

Actually, she was British. She was the sister of Captain Britain, and daughter to a British oligarch, and raised in a small English town. She used to wear a flowing pink costume. Then, after she was an X-Man for a bit, died AND was blinded (don't ask), Spiral removed her psyche and placed in the deceased daughter of a Chinese ninja (again, don't ask). Voila, she went from an upper class Brit to a Chinese ninja.

Man, comic stories are pretty insane when you try to explain them out of context.

The more you try to explain the stories, the more you realize someone was just throwing darts at plot points.

That sounds a bit different than what was scheduled. Here's how it was listed in the program:

Entertainment Weekly: Women Who Kick arse
Saturday July 26, 2014 4:10pm - 5:10pm
Hall H

A discussion among fierce, fearless and flat-out fantastic female actors such as Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Katey Sagal (Sons of Anarchy), Natalie Dormer (Game of Thrones), Nicole Beharie (Sleep Hollow) and Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story) that open up about the power and privilege of playing women who redefine the rules and refuse to yield.

And I wouldn't mind hearing Maisie Williams and Katey Sagal speak. I sat through less interesting panels to see the good stuff in Hall H.

How are they "fierce" and "fearless"?

I don't get the overplaying of their achievements. It's dumb.

Refuse to yield to what?

I would make a terrible feminist. I don't understand this junk.

Yea.

After reading it again, I realize the second part is talking about their characters.

I still don't understand the whole "fierce, fearless actor" part though.

How is being an actor fierce and fearless?

Back to the topic of the DOJ Teaser. Would've been pretty badass to see this Batman looking up at Superman instead of the cartoonish looking Frank Miller version.

Nah, I'm tired of those rubber looking suits. At least the Miller knockoff was something different. The other bat suit that they've been showing is best thing that they're taking from TDKR. Not a fan of the fat, earless chest logo, but the suit looks more normal that the usual scuba bat suit.
