Credit to Hollywood of yesteryear, If you watch this and then Midway, you have a pretty decent factual understanding of the pacific theater.
Just so many great WWII stories for whatever you want - longest day, saving private Ryan, great escape, Dirty Dozen, casablanca, Schindler’s list, Patton, letters from iwa jima, bridge over river Kwai, and that’s just scratching the surface.
And not a movie - but Restrepo is hard to beat for something on the Afghanistan war.

“Black Robe” - Set in 1634 it follows a Jesuit missionary as he travels in the new world to convert Algonquins to Christianity.
“Best Years of Our Lives” - Shows the adjustment of three WWII veterans after the war. Might not be a “true” war movie but instead shows the after effects of war. I put this film on my list of 10 movies everyone should see before they die list.
“Thin Red Line” - It was released around the same time as Saving Private Ryan and they are unfairly compared to one another. They are very, very different movies.

Hurt Locker is grossly underrated in this thread.

The Outpost is actually pretty accurate of what went down at COP Keating.

Come and See from 1985 about Germany invading Russia. This is probably the most brutal war movie you will see.

300, Blackhawk Down, Thin Red Line

I would have The Outpost as the most under appreciated war movie. I had never heard of it and caught on Netflix a year ago.

For anybody who has not seen Enemy At The Gate, do yourself a favor and watch it..one of my all-time favorite war movies.
Also:
Bridge Over The River Kwai
The Guns Of Navarone
Lone Survivor
Breaker Morant

All Quiet on the Western Front (1930)
The Best Years of Our Lives (1946) - actually a postwar movie
Paths of Glory (1957)
None have intense battle scenes, compared to more recent movies, but all are amazing and powerful films. I watched They Shall Not Grow Old again on a flight last week. It’s great too.

Platoon, Full Metal Jacket, and for something a little different, but intense: The Deerhunter.
