You're looking at 80's movies that wanted the dirty New York. It's no longer in vogue to show New York as the armpit of the world. Hence, films shy away from showing the worst sides of the city.

You could very easily find a dark and dirty alleyway in today's NYC.

NYC was fairly clean and seemed safe when I visited it twice in the early 90's.

Yea I think the 70's and 80's had a far different feel to it in NYC than the 90's and beyond

He'll even Queens is becoming gentrified these days

By the mid-80's, the main streets were pretty well maintained. The films that didn't focus on the underside of the city showed a pretty normal big city (Working Girl, Woody Allen films, etc.)

All that McDowell's money helped to clean the place up.

I'm just annoyed with all the reboots and remakes today in general. Ocean's Eight is going to be in vegas, but it will annoy me just the same.

I also heard that a Matrix reboot is in the works. I can think of nothing worse for the franchise. There are no more original ideas. Hollywood is full of hacks

ETA: I just read that ocean's eight is actually taking place in NYC...That does make things a little more infuriating actually

You need to get some perspective and a real life.

Every Ocean's movie is a remake and sequel, other than Sinatra's original.

The Matrix was a hodge-podge of lifted anime scenes and themes.

If you want originality, I'd stay away from both of those franchises.

I don't dislike reboots in general. I just dislike the prevalence of them today.

even if all the elements of the movie were perfect these remakes/reboots don't work because new York in the 80s and most of the 90s was gritty, dirty, metal trash cans overflowing in alleys, wet and dirty streets, crime everywhere, disrepair, porn theaters in times square (70s)

New York averaged roughly 1600 murders a year from 1968 to 1994 (peak in 90 with 2245) and now has ~350 a year. A lot of that correlates with national crime trends.

It used to be a really rough town. Now it's mostly gentrified.

i'm not saying they need to look like the dystopian hell hole of the 70s, but the pristine Disney world look of modern day new York, and not just manhattan, doesn't really lend itself well to a movie like say, ninja turtles (which used a lot of sets and very little location shooting)

I think to get that vibe from a movie set building on lots and matte paintings are the way to go. batman 89's gotham had the look that a movie like ninja turtles or even ghostbusters (also used matte paintings for rooftop vista) ghostbusters had a lot of on location shooting but new York doesn't look like that anymore.

new York used to have a tough man reputation. "this is new York. if you can make it here, you can make it anywhere"

now it's like "new York, isn't life easy"

It is kind of interesting seeing the skyline with the towers still there.

It had to. Part of Bickle's motivation was to be an avenger.

"Someday a real rain will come and wash all this scum off the streets.

Pretty much because if you live in New York - especially Manhattan - you're rich as hell.

I know. it's kind of lost some of the charm though don't you think...new York today feels like a city without an identity manufactured in some boring corporate board room.

in the 70s...now let's say they decide to remake that today. even if it's a better script, better acting, better everything it just wouldn't work because the location is wrong.
