Right, the city itself was almost a character. But man was it dingy. What a depressing movie.

it's not just grit either...it just doesn't feel real. take "as good as it gets" new York feels like a real place. it has charm (because it actually had charm) and it's an important part of the movie...now helen hunt would be living in Newark.

Let start up the Baseball Furies again, Fox and do our part to turn New York back into the shithole we all deserve.

you can really see it in the 90s movies and 90s style

it's not just NYC. Chicago and other big cities with major downtowns have the same issues

i made a thread about this after watching the original flatliners a few months ago. the way they shot downtowh chicago won't work today

I think the current mayor has it on the right track.

I just think it's an uninteresting place to set movies now, but growing up it was THE place to set your movie.

good news for los angeles though, it's still a dystopian shithole it's actually worse than the 80s and 90s.

It is kind of interesting seeing the skyline with the towers still there.

It pisses me off every time I catch an episode of Friends and they show the towers.

NYC was fairly clean and seemed safe when I visited it twice in the early 90's.

And it got even cleaner - which is why in the late 90's it became a darling for Rom-Coms - like You've Got Mail, Maid in Manhatten, Serendipity, etc.

If you can even call those movies NY...all they show is Rockfeller Square, fancy hotels and a pristine no-muggin Central Park.

And on your note of a city...showing up in reality on film and not a Disney version of the city...

There's Taxi Driver, Mean Streets, The Warriors, Midnight Cowboy, etc.

And the Taking of Pelham 123 remake sucked in comparison to the original...which has one of the better opening scores, ever.

They really showed NY city in the 70's and 80's films and today they just show tourist highlights.

Giuliani should be celebrated in that city.

Also Die Hard With a Vengence is the best NYC movie

Great film but the original Ghostbusters is probably my favorite NYC film.

I'd be down with this! I don't know who could play Snake Plisskin like Kurt Russel though

Such an underrated classic.

Reading this thread all I could think of was Taxi Driver and The French Connection when speaking if gritty NY films. Those are the two that really showed the hell hole parts of 1970s NY.

I take people to the Bronx, Brooklyn, I take 'em to Harlem. I don't care. Don't make no difference to me. It does to some. Some won't even take spooks. Don't make no difference to me.

That's when New York was at its most dangerous! 1991 was the most dangerous year in New York history with over 2000 murdered.

Always thought John McTiernan did a good job of showing off New York in Die Hard With A Vengeance and Thomas Crown Affair.
