from the series based on magical power or based on who could kick each others arse.

Curious as to where Harry would rank as well as Snape, and Lucius Malfoy.

I would assume Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore would be 1 but after that im torn between Harry and You Know Who at 2

Having only read the books once and looking forward to the final moving coming out in July, I was curious for some insight from the experts into this topic.

The top 3 are clearly Snape, Dumbledore, and Voldemort, but from there it becomes fairly irrelevant to rank them.

As far as I saw, and this is purely opinion and speculation:
1. Dumbledore (obvy)
2. Voldy
3. Snape
4. Moody (RIP)
5. Lupin
6. McGonagall (sp?)
7. Luna Lovegood

1) Dumbledore
2) Voldemort
2) Grindenwald
4) Snape
5) Bellatrix
6) Mad Eye Moody
7) Molly Weasley (when pissed off)
8) Lupin
9) Harry
10) Sirius Black

Sirius is a little bitch. I rank him just slightly ahead of the random faceless Death-Eater.

But yeah if I had to rank them:

1) Dumbledore
2) Voldemort
3) Snape
4) Grindelwald
5) Bellatrix
6) Moody
7) McGonagol
8) Lupin
9) Kingsley
10) Harry

Harry was really young though, and while better than most Death Eaters, certainly wasn't one of the most powerful Wizards at the end of the series.

Quite a few notoriously strong characters were killed without ever getting an introduction. I remember Hagrid mentioned two in particular who were part of the Order who were very strong by his standards.

This is the only correct top 5 IMO.

It gets ambiguous after that though

9) Kingsley
10) Hermione

Hermione is really just a filler for me at 10. Harry while a brave individual only had beyond normal magical abilities because of Voldemort. The only truly cool thing he could do was produce a powerful patronus charm (but that's also linked to the Voldemort and the night his parents died.)

TBH, the only reason Harry lived as long as he did was because Voldemort wanted to be the one to kill him. He told his followers to spare him so many times...

And while Harry can't face Voldemort on sheer magical talent, he had his mother's charm/dual cores/chance that he was the rightful owner of the Elder Wand, which was ended up tailored to being against Voldemort.

1) Voldemort (believe at some point dumbledore acknowledged this in the books)
2) Dumbledore
3)Sirius(only reason he died was because he took bellatrix lightly and died laughing at her while dueling)
4)Snape (not ahead of sirius because snape was his and james's bitch back in the day)
5) Mad Eye
6) Kingsley
7) Bellatrix
8) Lupin
9) Tonks
10) Harry

It was almost always 3 on one though. If it were just one on one, I'm pretty confident that Snape could have destroyed them.

You're all forgetting Merlin. He was introduced in the first book as a Wizard card.

But also, Nicholas Flamel must have been pretty powerful to create the Sorcerer's Stone, right?

Grindewalde is number 3 only one person remembered about him apparently. It says in the books he and Dumbledore were on the same level.

From what we know I think we can say:

1) Voldemort
2)Dumbledore
3)Grindewalde
4)everyone else

we can guess from the duals:

5)Snape/Kingsley/Mad_Eye
6)Bellatrix/Sirius/Wasn't Flitwit a dueling Champion?

this is pretty much guesswork though.

We didn't even include the 4 founders, who were mentioned in the book and could therefor be on the list. All were probably on par with the Voldemorts and Dumbledores of the world.

the only guy that spelled McGonagall right in this thread is also the only guy to put (sp?) after her name. i think that's funny.

Dumbledore was schooling Voldemort's arse at the Ministry.

And the books don't say Grindy was on the level of Dumbledore. . .Dumbledore beat Grindewalde when Grindy had the Elder Wand, iirc.

It is pretty much universally recognized that Dumbledore was the most powerful wizard in the world.

The fight at the ministry was pretty equal and Albus had the elder wand then. I think Dumbledore knows more then everyone, but that doesn't make him stronger. Dumbledore admits in the first book, I think it could have been a different book, that Voldemort has more powers then he(Albus) has ever had.

The books say that the duel between Albus and Grindewalde was"the greatest of all time", I guess it could have been the elder wand that made it so close but couldn't the same be said for the fight between him and Voldemort at the ministry.

Snape is certainly in the top 4. Voldemort had enough confidence in Snape's dueling abilities to take down Dumbledore himself, and he doesn't directly engage in a duel with him due to fear of what would happen due to him thinking that Snape was the master of the Elder Wand.
