I've noticed a lot of sets get left for whatever reason.

That could be like a nerd vacation destination.

Ya that is really weird.

Guess they don't consider this littering or don't care.

How awesome would it be if GL left them up on purpose only to refilm in those locations forty years later.. as per the script

I'm surprised someone hasn't made off with them. Would be worth some money to the right collector.

The link to the photographer's site led me to this video showing more abandoned sets from a few other movies. Video by Rä di Martino

Seems like some of it is from Lawrence of Arabia.

Anyone recognize the other sets?

How has someone not gone and laid claim to that stuff?

If one of these sets was abandoned in the middle of some place like Utah or Oklahoma, people would pillage it, put it in an online auction and have it sold withing a week. That, or someone would put a tarp over the tops of the structures and live there Charlie Manson style.

ETA: Little bit of an Anti-West sentiment to this?

I read that everything from LOTR in New Zealand was removed after shooting the films.

Not everything. I'm pretty sure you can tour the little Hobbit village or whatever (the Shire).

A group of Star Wars Fans went to Tunisia and saved Luke's house.
