***OFFICIAL Rogue One NON-SPOILER Reviews (pg. 5)***

With the release of the movie tonight to fans across the country, I'm transitioning this thread from CriticWatch to a Non-Spoiler review thread from this board's members.
It also appears that the RT meter is going to stay fairly well at 84%, so I've removed the fraction portion to make room for the new indication in the title.
For complete information from either Rotten tomatoes or Metacritic, you can simply click the links below.

Rotten Tomatoes Critics Consensus: Rogue One draws deep on Star Wars mythology while breaking new narrative and aesthetic ground -- and suggesting a bright blockbuster future for the franchise.

quote:
Edwards has created the rare Star Wars property that can be appreciated as a film. And it is about as violent and downbeat as Star Wars gets on the big screen-more downbeat than The Empire Strikes Back, in fact.
-Ignatiy Vishnevetsky: AV Club
quote:
Doesn't break the mold in terms of franchise formula, and it's an enjoyable installment in the "Star Wars" canon. However, it's not much more than that.
-Katie Walsh: Tribune News Service
quote:
It tries so hard to be an epic masterpiece - with self-important speeches and an insanely outsize orchestral score - that it ends up a laughable parody of itself.
-Tirdad Derakhshani: Philadelphia Inquirer
quote:
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" shows that the "Star Wars" universe can produce authentic adult entertainment without losing a bit of its frenetic energy.
-Colin Covert: Minneapolis Star Tribune
quote:
"Rogue One" represents an unobjectionable exercise in franchise extension. It's fine. It'll do. For now.
-Ann Hornaday: Washington Post
quote:
It stands alone as the best Star Wars entry since 1980's The Empire Strikes Back. Yes, it's that good.
-Ethan Sacks: New York Daily News

eo it sounds like the movie will be enjoyable but it doesn't really stand on its own two feet without A New Hope.

Yeah, some of the negative reviews say it's same ole, same ole. Not surpring since it's Disney. Star Wars will be treated the same as the MCU.

Yep, I'm getting exactly what I thought out of the reviews so far. Movie will be visually gorgeous, action while extremely predictable and scripted will still be entertaining, but movie will be extremely preachy and self-righteous.

TIME had a fairly critical review -

We’re in such a rush to have stories about women who do things that we haven’t thought much about what they should be doing. Kicking arse? Leaving bad husbands? Driving cars off cliffs? All of those can be great things, in the right story, but you can’t just sew bravery onto a character like a Girl Scout patch.
If it doesn’t come from someplace within, it’s just a gimmick. In Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, it’s a gimmick, no matter how well-intentioned.
There’s nothing in Rogue One that would damage or scare most little children, as long as they’re prepared for an on-screen onslaught of the Pantone colors known as Oatmeal and Soot.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will not change lives for the worse or for the better, and it will—or ought to—offend no one. Welcome to the Republic of the Just OK.

Props to Time for that review. The PC police will be on them shortly, if they're not already.

I don't expect this movie to be very good, and in fact as far as the jist of what that review says is kind of in line with my expectations
having said that, that review is a caricature of mainstream film critics she just sounds so fricking full of herself...just tell us what it does wrong, you're not trying for a fricking Pulitzer here.

Stephanie Zacharek is my favorite critic with whom I like to have mental arguments. I disagree with her frequently, but she usually makes a cogent, well-made argument. I look forward to her reviews which I will almost always disagree with:
From the same TIME review:
I mean, damn.
From the same TIME review:

Franchise loyalists will recognize him as Bail Organa, from Revenge of the Sith and Attack of the Clones, a reminder of the days when the Star Wars franchise was a bountiful font of drag-queen names. Rogue One made me nostalgic for those movies, a thing I never thought I’d say. They were boring and stupid and Lucas, their mastermind, took them way too seriously. But at least they scooted along, semi-efficiently, on the fumes of their own ridiculousness.
I mean, damn.

its getting a lot of MEH reviews. dont care still cant wait to see it, but im surprised how many big critics are crapping on it

Are the collider people that big of star wars homers? Seemed like all of them loved it.
Posted on 12/13/16 at 1:32 pm to Civildawg
a lot of the genre critics really like it. i think if you're a star wars fan you'll really like it.
Posted on 12/13/16 at 1:33 pm to Civildawg
The ones reviewing it are huge Star Wars fans. Harloff has a canon planet named after him
I still think they give a fair review of it for what Star Wars fans will think of it. I love Collider. Their reactions to most movies line up pretty well with mine, so they're a good litmus test.
