I have the most basic cable package as well. No HD or anything since I watch all my shows through Hulu. It came with a year of free HBO, so I get to watch HBO Go as well. In total I'm paying about 130 and that gets me the fastest internet available and pretty much anything I want to watch except for sports in HD. Can still watch, just not in HD.

I have Netflix and Amazon. And I've tried Hulu.

Netflix is great for their original shows, and if you have kids. They have a huge kids selection.

Amazon has better movies and a pretty decent show selection.

Hulu blows because you have to watch commercials.

Which do you like the best? Best provider for newer movies?

First, none of the above is a good provider of new movies unless you're talking about the DVDs by mail from NetFlix.

Do you currently have cable/satellite TV? If not, Get Hulu +, it's content library is aimed at current TV shows. It solves a different problem and is really not a competitor to NetFlix/Amazon.

Between NetFlix and Amazon, there is a lot of overlap but enough difference to justify both IMO. But if you can't afford or don't want both, are you already paying for Prime? If so then stick with Amazon, you're already paying for it. If not then go with NetFlix.

We currently have Netflix and Amazon Prime and had Hulu Plus in the past. They've all got good and weak points. It seems like Netflix has better original programming, although Amazon is coming on strong. I also like that Amazon has current pay-per view movies for a little less than Cox. Hulu is good for having a lot of eclectic shows from the past (they have a shitload of old Doctor Who episodes)

The movies kind of rotate off and on, so I would just see which service had the most series that you would want to watch. Amazon has HBO shows, but a couple of years behind the network.

This is what will eventually get me.

I started back in the Tom Baker era so I really haven't seen any of Pertwee or Troughton and only a few Hartnell's.

Local PBS showed most of the Davison episodes but coverage got sketchy with Colin Baker and McCoy so at some point I would like to burn through the whole series which I can only do with Hulu or a massive 300gb download.

If you live in EBR, the library system has the entire run available on DVD. I watched the good Pertwee ones that way...and enough Colin Baker episodes to make me realize how not good he was and how bad the show was during that time.

After saying I won't get Hulu, I went ahead and signed up to check out the BBC programs. I think I can get $8 worth per month.

Yeah, they have the Thick of It on Hulu Plus. One day, I may just get Hulu Plus back and plow through that whole series. They also have Klown, this Danish series that is hilarious and cringe inducing. (It's like Curb Your Enthusiasm, except with two Larry Davids. There's a movie version that is so funny -- the plot involves a guy trying to convince his pregnant girlfriend not to get an abortion, by showing her how responsible he can be with her kid from a previous marriage.)
