I have never seen Blade Runner and want to watch it before the new one comes out. There are three different versions of it on Amazon. Which one should I watch?

Theatrical version (it's the only one available to rent, but I have no problem buying the other two if one of them is better)

The Directors Cut

or

The Final Cut

I have been putting off watching this movie for a while but tonight I feel like giving it a shot.

final cut is Ridley's full say on editing the final product.

directors cut is good, final cut is best.

Do it. It's the closest to perfection we'll ever get.

Hell I started it just the other day to test my Plex server (which was acting up on me). I'm going to watch it this weekend and either Sicario or Arrival.

Most fans consider the Final Cut to be the best one. A new 4k version just came out. Not sure which one it is, Final cut I think.

BR is in my top 5.

A great book just came out called Future Noir about the making of the first one and with info on the new one too.

Final Cut takes out Harrison Ford's terrible voice overs. They were going for the private eye style, so they wanted voice overs throughout the story, but Ford didn't think they were necessary. In the end, he was pretty much forced to do it and it shows. Ford's voice sounds so reluctant and angry in the voice overs that it was pretty distracting.

Also, they add a key scene back in that gives the viewer a major plot aspect to analyze and debate.

And the ending is left more ambiguous.

To answer the OP's question. Final Cut is definitely the best. Blade Runner is one of my favorite films. My and my gf already got tickets to see the new one Thursday. It looks good, but I doubt it's going to be as weird and unique as the original. I hope so though. I love sci-fi that gives you a lot to analyze and think about.

Call me old school but I love the voice overs. I saw this in the theater when it was released. I remember it distinctly because my friend and I watched John Carpenter's The Thing first, then snuck in to Blade Runner. What an awesome double feature for a couple of high school sophomore nerds!

Anyway, to me, the voice over is perfect. The deadpan, lifeless, emotionless tone perfectly reflects Deckard's own emotional state. He has lost his way, and has no hope for humanity. He's burnt out, sick of the violence and killing, numb to the world around him.

I know it's become an unpopular opinion, but I hold to it. I'll confess that I haven't seen the Director's or Final cuts though.

But I DO have a VHS copy of the European release and it's my favorite. There are a few added scenes that take the violence and brutality to a new level.

But to each his own.

I don't love them, now that I've seen the movie without it - but they didn't bother me as much as they do some folks. Ford deliberately tried to tank them - thinking the final product would be so bad the studio would refuse to use them. Ridley, IIRC, refused to participate in additional editing of the film and almost disavowed the film because of studio meddling. Obviously he couldn't, because this is his baby. I mean, since then, he's done some great and not-so-great films, including monsters like Gladiator, a definitive modern war film like Blackhawk Down, and a fantastic medieval story in Kingdom of Heaven (<-his "Roadshow" or Director's Cut is a huge improvement - makes it a great film).

But, Blade Runner is what he'll be remember for, primarily. He has to know this and that's why I'm hoping the new film will be good.

Back to your point about the voiceovers - I did enjoy the theatrical release - it was probably my favorite movie at the time. When I picked up the so-called Director's Cut with the voiceover removed, I got what Ridley and Ford were upset about - it was dumbing the movie down for the audience.

The Final Cut fixes the remaining few flaws in a way that does not compromise the film the way Lucas did with Star Wars and Spielberg did with ET. It is as close to perfection in a film that I believe we will ever see. No wasted frames. No wasted dialogue - as good as Dick's writing is, this film elevates even that - ultimately great science fiction gets us to think about humanity as it progresses (regresses?) with all the implications of technology. Blade Runner does this perfectly.

“Directors Cut”

It omits the voiceover, adds the unicorn scene, but leaves some of the continuity errors intact, as well as an unfortunate stunt double scene. The continuity errors and stunt double problems are corrected by The Final Cut. There are other, minor changes as well, but those are the biggies.

If you haven't seen the film, I would watch whatever I could. I have every version of the film.

Do what you have to do.
