"1000 Acres" was an award winning book, yet one of the worst star studded movies ever made.

However, the movie was horrible and extremely boring.

Dune is a little polarizing, but I liked it. Herbert himself even approved. I concede that the ambition of the movie was almost limitless and couldn't help to fail to realize it, but that's what you get with Lynch - he's not going to set the bar at "Let's make the best B minus Dune film we can." - he's going to swing for the fences, every time.

In Time has a great concept. There is a great movie in there somewhere but the execution was horrible.

knights of badassdom was based on an internet movie, that was up on youtube for years.

The youtube version was far better than the knights of badassdom.

Disagree on The Purge the premise of a short period of lawlessness is asinine in a civilized nation.

Altered States

Really good book.
quote:

Altered States is a 1980 American science fiction-horror film adaptation of a novel by the same name by playwright and screenwriter Paddy Chayefsky in his only novel he ever wrote and his final film. Both the novel and the film are based on John C. Lilly's sensory deprivation research conducted in isolation tanks under the influence of psychoactive drugs like mescaline, ketamine and LSD.

Boyhood. I had to see it when I heard how it was filmed. It was awful.

Timeline/Progressions hard to follow

Mother wasn't that great as a mother and had very few redeeming qualities. I am not sure she was involved in one thing her kids did and it showed bc they were pretty empty characters. They tossed in random moments or comments to make her seem so great but it was choppy, superficial, cheap and hard to buy into.

Random political crap thrown in.

Hard to even figure out the point was except for someone to attempt to make artsy people feel like they are really great kids??? I'm not sure.

When I first heard the premise in a preview the first thought that passed through my head is that it is based of off some bad social science and superficially understood understanding of basic economics principles. Their claim of "0% unemployment" or "1% unemployment" or whatever it is just particularly struck me as sounding absurd.

In Time is my go-to for this. Such a cool concept, but then they hired Timberlake and Seyfried, and both sucked massively.

Jeepers Creepers could possibly qualify. Loved the concept, and the first half is amazing, and then it just becomes hilariously bad.

The Core could also work. I thought the concept was cool, and I actually kinda liked it. But most people hate it and think it's pretty horrible. And upon rewatch it really does have a ton of flaws and although it was a cool concept, it didn't really work too well.

I want to say Sunshine, because that was a cool arse idea for a movie that ended up failing to deliver on all of its awesomeness in the third act...but I feel like that may be just the creators of the movie fricking up rather than the movie "not working in reality." (ETA: and I still love Sunshine)

sunshine was kind of a mixture of a bunch of other movies. danny boyle was really big on doing homage films at that point in his career

that movie was HEAVILY influenced by event horizon

I actually really like Sunshine, even the 3rd act

Boyhood is actually a good example. When I saw it, I liked it. But on rewatch and after thinking about it, I can't help but hate the main character and the movie overall just feels gimmicky now

Well that much has always been clear. So clear that they almost ripped it off scene by scene in some places.

Same here. I do think it could've been one of the GOATs had it finished stronger though.

Timeline. Was never going to be profound cinema, but it was based on a Chricton book that was pretty good with a cool premise, and shot for almost nothing with a shite cast. When Paul Walker is the lead, you know you're in for a turdfest.

Can't you really say this for any Crichton novel not named Jurassic Park? (One could argue Andromeda Strain)

I mean, Sphere is one of my favorite books of all time. But the movie completely missed the point. There was nothing terrifying about it. One of the central plot points at the end was Norman's ability to be more in control of his emotions than the others, so he was able to manage the power somewhat. But thats not important, we'd rather have Hoffman run around like a fool and have him get sucked in by accident. And that ending, holy hell. The sphere flying over everyone, but noone is going to ask them "hey, what the hell was that ball we saw?"

I actually liked Sphere back in the day. I thought it was kinda cool.

Never read the book though.
