Having to give the win to Old Yeller though, no kid wants to lose their dog, and have to be the one to pull the trigger.

Simba's father's death in The Lion King is a notch above Bambi for me. Maybe because his character becomes more developed and I get more attached to him. Maybe it's because I lost my father at a young age. Or because I have sons. Something just raw and emotional about charging into certain death to save your son.

Mufasa being murdered by his brother, in front of his son, then the murdering brother making his nephew believe his dad died b/c of him. That tops the cake.

Also, when you think everyone from Toy Story was going to get incinerated, even though they didn't, it was still traumatizing to think that was the end at that moment.

Yeah, Disney has pretty much cornered the market on traumatizing children. In a way it's good though because it deals with realities too many children have to face.

Dude, my teacher read that to the whole class in the 5th grade. Nearly the entire class was crying (including the teacher) as she was reading those last parts.

I watched it with my boys this summer on Netflix. They were bawling at the end and one said "why did you show this to us"...of course, now, he admits that it is his favorite movie.

Never seen a movie and it's been a long time since I've read the book so it might not matter anyway, but how faithful is the film to the book?

It stays pretty true to the book as far as I remember. I read the book a loong time ago.

Here are some differences that I noticed:

The movie doesn't start with the dog fight...it starts focusing on Billy's childhood.

In the movie, Billy and the dogs don't win the coon hunting competition...another person wins it, but gives the cup and money to Billy.

The book, of course, is better...but it was easier to get 10 year olds to buy in on watching a movie.

I looked it up...here is a page that shows some other differences between the book and the movie.

The Good Dinosaur has a similar scene to the Mufasa scene in Lion King. It's not nearly as iconic or anything, but the circumstances are similar (although the father wasn't pushed off)
