Not exactly a spin-off, because I started rewatching the series two days ago. The pilot episodes are better than anything else Michael Mann ever did. The music, starting with The Rolling Stones and climaxing with Phil Collins, is perfect.
Then the episode with Ed O’Neill.
Don Johnson is perfectly casted. PMT probably doesn’t get enough credit. Switek, Zito, Gina and Trudy great in supporting roles
I’ve made it to the return of Calderone and watching it as I post. The show really stands up.

Mann’s version should come with a disclaimer, that last shootout sequence could be a PTSD trigger for combat vets.
Also, Mogwai - Auto Rock may be the most underrated movie score of all time.

The episode "Definitely Miami" has 80's wrote all over it. It's probably the one I've rewatched the most over the years

That last scene with the police coming for the girl at the end of the beach and Crockett pulls the shades out is bad arse.

Yep they nailed it with him.
Few people know that the role almost went to Gary Cole, who later appeared as a side character.

The last scene is 12 minutes. Didn't ruin it by splitting it up with commercials

Dude had a 30 yr career before most people even knew who he was. He was in Trading Places when he was about 19.

The one I remember most other than the pilot is when they had to go into the swamp to protect some woman and the drug guys showed up to kill her. CrockeT and Tubs had some local swamp folks fighting too and it was great.
Crocket drew down on a bad guy with the girl as a hostage…”if I flinch she dies”
“Maybe you won’t flinch”…BOOM
One of the old swamp guys has a massive shotgun that keeps messing up but in the end he gets it to work on a guy that has the drop on Crockett and blows the guy through a door….and the giggles.
That how I remember it after 30 years. Great episode.

That is a first season episode called The Glades. An important witness against some drug dealers escapes protective custody and hides out in the Everglades with his folk. Crockett and Tubbs go "undercover" to find him before the drug dealers do. They get tossed deep into the swamp first by some locals.
"Maybe you won't even twitch" is the line Crockett uses. The movie borrows from this scene.

I need to do this. What are you watching it on?

Bill Simmons did a great Rewatchables episode on the two Calerone's Return episodes, the only TV show they've done.

That episode drew a lot of comments from my buddies because of that badass scene. I don’t think anything like it had been done on TV before…at least not that I had seen (Magnum P.I.”s “Did you see the Sun rise this morning?” Came close, but that was straight up murder).
“Maybe…you won’t even…twitch” BOOM. Badass. Common in TV and movies now, but back then, not so much.

Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell played their roles well. Great soundtrack too!
