He was badass in Reign of Fire. Except for the ending, not really sure what happened there.

It's funny seeing everyone jumping on the McConaughey bandwagon. He's always been a great actor.

He's always been good IMO. It's just that now he's making better movies than he used to.

He was awesome in Dazed and Confused, A Time to Kill, and several other early movies...it's just that he started settling for RomComs and not trying as hard. Glad to see he's finally getting back to being a serious actor (or whatever you want to call it).

But let's not forget that even when he was making shite RomComs, he was still being awesome in shite like U-571 and Frailty.

(and Reign of Fire, though I admittedly love that movie more than most)

I've enjoyed most of his performances. He was good in Contact, one of my favorite movies. Mud was good. Haven't seen Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street or True Detective.

He's always been a good actor but was kind of floating through the early 2000's with a bunch of romantic comedies. His talent was always there though. I guess he got tired of hearing that he wasn't good and stepped it up a bit. Glad he did, the guy is killing it right now.

this

except I would say he was doing those rom coms to make enough money to be able to do the lower budget films he has been going with lately.

You really see his acting chops in HBO's True Detective

true detective is what clinched it for me. He is really good in that, showing quite a range from Mud to dallas buyers club to this. Quite impressive.

Just checked out his IMDB. Wow, he did a lot of crap up until about 3 years ago.

I always thought he was the only one on screen that could keep up with Pacino in Two For the Money. I thought he was good in U571 as well.

He did a lot of those rom-coms prior to having a kid and getting married. After he had his kid and got married, I'm assuming he swore off the insane amount of tail throwing themselves at him and decided to actually focus on things other than drugs, sex, and making piles of money doing shitty movies. He decided to get back into what he was doing professionally and challenge himself doing that, rather than challenging himself to see how many hot extras and young starlets he could notch into his bedpost.

He has always been a fine actor. Great even. He was great in A Time to Kill, Amistad, U-571 and Frailty; good in Contact, EdTV, and We Are Marshall. I even enjoyed him in Sahara, though that was certainly a fun movie, rather than a real stretch for him as an actor. I think after doing Fool's Gold he had probably already signed on for Ghosts of Girlfriends Past and decided: "That's the last one." He had plenty of money, life had settled down for him, and he decided to reinvent his image. He's done a helluva job at it, that's for sure. I can't wait to see what he does next.

He showed promise as far back as Amistad and A Time to Kill.

He's certainly made some fantastic choices lately. My favorite roles of his are also the more recent: Mud, Dallas, TD. All solid dramatic acting-though he hasn't really had to stretch beyond Texas guy in any of those roles. Even in Dallas Buyer's (after apparently going on a tapeworm diet for the part) he's still pickin fights & bein smooth with the laadays. I don't mean that as a knock, and own Mud & DBC. I'm just thankful when I don't have to suffer through an awful accent in an otherwise good film.

He's absolutely stated that he was just coasting and getting paid. He'd take the rom Com paycheck and go travel the world. Now he has a family and is getting really serious. Dude has lived the dream and is a great actor

I think "Failure to Launch" was his breakout role.
