If the show acts like black people get hunted down and shot by white cops just for being black, then that isn't social consciousness. It's just lies. That would certainly ruin the show for me.

If it deals with the black community and issues facing them honestly without blaming everything on everybody else, then it will be great.

I guess it all depends on their definition of social consciousness. I'm hoping it's honest.

It's pretty much this, but most of the white folks are bad guys.

I can probably live with that. It's pathetic, but most comic book villains seem to be white anyway.

Nobody ever calls for more black villains.

That's what it is.

You even have a black man give a speech about the the absence of black men as fathers and a very cynical take on a black politician who publicly speaks about "keeping Harlem black" but her motivations are more about lining her pockets, almost a female Al Sharpton type.

And who are the "mostly white bad guys"?

I'm only on episode five but Cottonmouth and Diamondback are black and Shades is latino. There is a white dirty cop but he works for the bad black guy. The crooked prison guard was white but he lasted one episode.

Really, the only white major character is the dirty cop at this point. The "baddest" bad guys are people of color and there are way more of them.

The message, to me, is about the people of Harlem ruining their own community. I may have missed it but I've yet to see a scene where someone blames the mess in Harlem on "white people".

I should have said the white characters are bad.

This show is better than Daredevil and Jessica Jones. I just finished episode 5 and I find it has the most compelling narrative and protagonist of all the series. It is solid, arse-kicking, original funk.

I'm digging it. But is anyone watching the show and fantasy recasting it with folks from The Wire? Like Idris Elba would have killed as Cottonmouth. Or Clarke Peters as Bobby Fish. Or Dominic West as Misty's partner....

Well so far, we have Burrell (Pop), Butchie (blind magazine stand guy), and Kima (police captian) from "The Wire" through episode six.

I think Michael K. Williams (Omar) would have made a great Cottonmouth.

To be fair, Cage had a massive beard and afro.

Not really a spoiler, but shades recognizes him in ep 5.

I'm only through 3 episodes, but no, not even close. It is very slow moving. I feel like fast forwarding through some of it. First few episodes of daredevil were like that for me, and it got better. I'm sure this one will get better too. There's nothing I'm really excited about through three episodes, but I have faith I will enjoy it.

I was really disappointed in the first episode. Really slow pace and the dialogue was really bad, not sure if it was the acting or the words, but the opening scene in the barbershop for example just wasn't very well executed. Too much set up I guess, fortunately we've already been introduced to Luke Cage so I knew it would get better.

I'm sure I'll get downvoted to hell for not proclaiming my love for every bit of the show, but the point of this post is to let people know that if they don't like the first episode keep going, when the action happens it's really good.

See I thought the dialogue has been better than S1 of Daredevil. The first episodes just were blah minus the action.

I'm 2 episodes in and I love it. This one has me hooked way sooner than Daredevil or JJ did. The guy who plays Luke is great but Cornell has stolen the show.

Wait until you see his backstory and meet Mama Mabel.

He turns remarkably sympathetic like Fisk.

Finished.

I am going the other way, it started off great and just dragged the last few episodes.

I like Jessica Jones the best and Daredevil second.
