Not that Independence Day 2 is in the same category as these other films, but we are talking about the same guy who turned down The Matrix and Django Unchained, to do Wild Wild West and After Earth.

Actually the earth's crust shifting enough to allow a plane just leaving the US west coast to land in China 15 minutes later at their exact destination, which during this insanely incredible crust shift was completely undamaged with people walking around as if nothing happened at all...is in my opinion FAR more implausible.

It's all a part of Will Smith's new approach to acting. The key thing is to not be involved in any movies that are successful.

That's ignoring that there's a more than slight chance this movie veers a little off course and goes from awesome popcorn flick to stupid. It'll make money either way but this isn't a slam dunk and it's not like he needs the money.

That has to be the most implausible story line ever put into a movie. Just mind-numbingly idiotic.

More idiotic than aliens that are deathly allergic to water invading a planet where ~70% of the surface is covered in water? A planet who's atmosphere could possibly contain up to 4% water vapor? Where the organisms they are trying to exterminate are also ~70% water?

You're right, a computer virus is stupid... Haha. fricking "Signs."

Anywho, it's the same concept as "War of the Worlds" where they can't handle an Earth "pathogen." And it can make sense from a "biological" standpoint for either way. They were never exposed to computer viruses from earth, so therefore they couldn't defend against them. But I guess that leads to a coding problem for the humans as well.

Too much?

I read an article that implied that the reason the technology was compatible was because our current knowledge of comp tech came from the ship that crashed in 50's.. It made more sense under that premise but I don't know if they actually stated this in movie.

It's been awhile since I watched the movie. However I remember them mentioning that a lot of things had been reverse engineered from studying that ship.

One of the nitpicky things just for the sake of being nitpicky of ID 1 was how many aliens must have survived. Yeah the ships took a lot of damage and crashed... but there seemed to be a significant percentage of all those ships that didn't seem damaged. The humans would have a lot of clean-up fighting to do.

When I watched this movie as an adult, I couldn't get past the Grand Canyon of the alien technology being able to be infected by a human made computer virus.

That and this. You have this advanced technology with these spaceships with shields. Yet none of them had any type of tracking ability with their weapons. No heat seeking, lock on targeting.

Could be what the sequel addresses. Perhaps Will Smith's kid (and many like him) has grown up his whole life with Earthlings fighting an alien guerrilla force. A force that cannot retreat, but must fight and beat the Earthlings to eventually recreate their mothership/smaller ship/just the super weapon. Maybe the new weapon is under construction. Hell, perhaps the aliens are now even using humans as Body Armor like they did with the tentacle alien in the first one. Which creates a sort of "Terminator" scenario where you don't know who is human or isn't, at least initially.

This alternate future may also have future "steampunk" weaponry, where our "modern" tech is used interchangeably with some of the tech we were able to harvest.

That could be neat. Having yet another invasion force is a cheap out from what we were told in ID4.

Alright, I read this twice and I feel like I need to get in touch with Roland.
