Lets make a chart for "Is it a Christmas Movie?" ( or how much of an Xmas movie)

Initially i was think an X,Y axis with Christmas Time and Christmas Theme being the labels. (i.e. Die hard would score highly on the time and low on the theme)
But that is a dumb way to do it for a myriad of reasons.
1) Almost all Christmas Theme movies will score highly on the time.
1b) In fact Christmas Time is a more of a binary question...yes or no.
2) Im also not sure that method allows for a proper rating of movies like Lord of the Rings. Those movies are kinda Christmasy (as discussed in a previous thread) however the above chart would return negative scores for both time/theme.
Other factors that perhaps should be considered
-Time of the year traditionally watched. (subjective to the viewer so could be hard)
Anyway...Lets tackle this age old problem. What makes a christmas movie a christmas movie? How do we quantify it? And then lets decide on scores for commonly discussed movies.

is it about Christmas? then I say it's a Christmas movie. If it just happens to take place at Christmas time. I say it's not a Christmas movie

It's A Wonderful Life isn't about Christmas.

Thats a simpleton approach. There is not grading in that. A christmas story is less a christmas movie than say, The Santa Clause. We must grade it.

Does it take place around Christmas time? Yes.
Do we see Christmas trees and/or Christmas presents? Yes.
Does it involve a family spending time or trying to spend time with each other? Yes.
Does it end happily ever after? Yes.
If you meet all of these, then it is a Christmas movie.

But Die Hard is...because it centers around a Christmas Party.

The question isnt just is it a Christmas Movie. Its to what extent.
Ill change the title to reflect. We shall call it "The Die Hard Scale" or something.

Q: Is the movie about Christmas?
If:
A: Yes, this movie is about themes of the holiday and specifically about the holiday. The time of the year could not be changed without fundamentally changing the central premise of the movie.
Or if:
A: No, there are no explicit themes of the holiday. The story just happens during a certain time of the year, and the central premise would not be changed if it took place at any of a number of times during the year.
It's that simple, you fricking heathens.

Making things convoluted and meaningless doesn't mean that you posses depth. There are simple truths in this world. Everything isn't subjective.
God damn nihilists.

I enjoy talking in detail about things. Its fun to go into hilarious detail with your buddies about inane topics.
Its weird to me that people would go "HMMPFFHF, lets just not think about this at all! Thinking is no fun!"
Move along if you have better shite to do. Ill be here with my GOD DAMN DIE HARD CHART!!!!!

It's especially weird on this board because it was basically made to:

Yeah. It's weird how people get upset when someone tries to do something that the board is built for. I'm all in for this.
Rankin/Bass films are about as Christmas as you can get, so they should probably be some of the highest on the chart. Rudolph and Frosty's Christmas in July though would rank much lower, since it's set in July and doesn't really have that much to do with Christmas at all.

Pretty much this. There is an additional way a movie can become a Christmas movie, which I'd call the It's a Wonderful Life test: has the movie become an integral part of the holiday season? To use another Capra film, Meet John Doe ALSO has a climax set during the holidays of an everyman pushed to the brink of suicide (God, Capra was dark). On their own merits, the two films are incredibly similar, yet Meet John Doe is NOT a Christmas movie because it never fell into the public domain and got broadcast on every UHF channel 20 gazillion times during the holiday season like It's a Wonderful Life did in the 80s.
Die Hard is like Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Lethal Weapon, Eyes Wide Shut, or any number of movies that happen to be set during Christmas. It's not a Christmas movie (though I'd argue Gremlins is), but it is the punchline to the hackiest of internet jokes which pretty much signals that the joke-teller thinks he is a lot funnier than he actually is. He probably says dicks out for Harambe as well, because he is unable to come up with his own material. It's the airline food jokes of the internet.

People say "Die Hard is my favorite Christmas movie" in an attempt to be funny and/or antagonizing. Only the joke is 30 years old and frankly, if you're gonna do it, update it with something genuinely shocking, like Eyes Wide Shut (nothing say Christmas to me like Nicole Kidman squatting over the toilet, arguing about infidelity). It's not the sentiment I dislike, it's the hackiness of the material.
It should be on the white board of joke cliches from the writers room of Workaholics.

Eh , Die Hard could have just as well taken place during the Nakitomi company's anniversary party in August.

Pretty transparent. It's an excuse to argue, and there can be no understanding met or gained.

I guess it probably should just be allowed to die...
