When has Leo taken a role outside his typical role or comfort zone?

I think his portrayal of Howard Hughes in The Aviator is an example of this. Fairly brilliant. On par with Tommy Lee Jones back in the day. Jason Robards did a good job with a more fictionalized (or at least unconfirmed) portrayal - the role tends to draw good actors. Leo did a great job with that one - and an obsessive compulsive character would probably be outside of the comfort zone of most folks, even those who might be obsessive compulsive themselves.

That's still been his best performance and truly got robbed at the oscars over.

Now which one lately when he can basically choose his projects? Would he try a slapstick? pull off a Rom Com? A musical? I can't see him in those roles personally and I hope he doesn't go that route but to be able to step in any role and pull it off is extremely hard. Could you see him doing what Jared Leto did in Dallas Buyers or even Matthew McConaughey? Speaking of, Matthew almost upstaged him in Wolf of Wall Street even in that minor part.

Aviator was mentioned above and I don't feel like arguing the merits of mimicry.

He would need to win an Oscar before I would consider this. Although he is still one of the best in Hollywood right now. The OP has lost his fricking mind though.

He wouldn't have to win an oscar for me but it does tell you something about what the industry thinks. He'll get one eventually.

Terrible movie, but I enjoy it.

Say what you want about the details of his specific acting, and I can't say I've seen all of his works, but I can say I've enjoyed every one of the movies that I have seen with him in. So take that for whatever the hell it's worth.

Now come on, man. Matthew had some nice moments in there with that small role, but Leo killed it in Wolf.

I still say he is the best of his generation and on his way to be one of the best ever.

Could you see Matthew McConaughey pulling off that role of Jordan if flipped? If you saw the real Jordan Belfort could you see somebody like Robert Downey pulling that character off? I can easily.

Now flip it. Could you see Leo being Ron Woodruff? Meh. Can you see Leo doing Ironman? No, nor would you want to. That's basically what I'm getting at. Some actors can do that better than Leo can and that makes them great or better than him IMO. Both Matthew and Robert are able to pull off doing artsy, blockbusters, comedy, action, etc. I'm not saying he isn't talented at all. Leo is one of the best leading men and walks that fine line of being a movie star but still manages reputable films and works with the best directors. Very few are able to do it.

Not so fast. He was serviceable in Inception. Christopher Nolan was incredible.

Plug in any number of actors into Leo's Inception role and it would have been just as good, perhaps better.

You have maybe 8 directors worth a crap in Hollywood. Leo is never going to do terrible movies anymore and that's a fact. The guy is going to be one of the greats just look at his catalogue already.

J Edgar was another very good role for him that he took a chance on IMO. Its easy to hate him because he is so popular.

And comparing him to a guy like Tom Cruise isn't really worth comparing. Cruise does mostly action movies which suit him well. Leo does dramatic roles, which suit him well.

I know one thing, if Leo has a movie coming out, i'm gonna check it out. Gatsby is the only movie he has been in in the last 10 years that wasn't good IMO

Yep, this is onenthingni agree with you on. I've stated here a few times before, and the fanboys go absolutely mental when you talk shite about their golden boy Leo, that he is highly overrated as an actor. There's not one role outside of maybe Gilbert grape where someone else couldn't have done it better.

All of that isn't to say I don't enjoy his movies, because by and large I do. He's a really good movie star, but in my eyes, not a great actor.

Fanboys...downvote away.

His role in Django Unchained comes to mind, was he really comfortable with that role? Because it's totally different than anything he had ever done before that. I can see the comparison to Cruise but Harrison Ford? Seriously clark? Wow just wow.

I don't think he's GOAT status but he's certainly a top 20 actor. That's one of the most ludicrous things said on this board....name me 20 better. That have actually been in mainstream movies, not some indie/sundance flick

You missed the point. The comparison to Ford was in that he's a good bankable leading man that you could plug in any A-lister and about get the same results. I'm not not comparing the acting chops.

quote:

was he really comfortable with that role?

Absolutely he was. Tarantino let him formulate that character. Since Titanic, his formula is to pick the trendy/hot director's next project. That's safe and not taking any chances. It suits him well. There's less likely a chance to miss. Being out of his comfort role would him doing a musical, slapstick comedy, or some lesser known director's project. But do you really think that's right for him? I don't. But you see many other actors doing that.

quote:

name me 20 better.

Name you 20 actors I think are better? You know this is opinion right?
McConaughey, Downey, Jack, Jeff Bridges, Penn, Pacino, Oldman, Hoffman, Hanks, Denzel, Deniro, Hackman, Depp, Michael Caine, Harrelson, Norton, Reilley, Recently deceased, Williams, Newman, Hoffman. You want me to dig up people like James Stewart, brando and Bogart? I don't even have to add DDL, Bale or Freeman. That's off the top of my head.

The questions to be asked is who gets an oscar first, Leo or Bradley Cooper?
